Is the YETI Trailhead chair worth it? The durability case, from the spec sheet

The verdict

A note on method: we haven't bought, sat in or used a Trailhead. This review reads YETI's product page, its chairs FAQ and its warranty page, plus two named reviews (CleverHiker and OutdoorGearLab) for the two figures YETI doesn't publish. Every number links to its source, and the score follows our published scoring rubric.

What you're paying for

Capacity. YETI's product page says the FlexGrid fabric “supports up to 500 lbs,” and its chairs FAQ gives the same 500 lb limit for the chair. That sits in our 450 to 599 lb band, a build score of 8. It is a solid rating, though 300 lb short of the King Kong's. YETI doesn't say whether the figure is a static load (weight resting in the seat) or allows for dropping into the chair, so leave headroom under it rather than treating 500 lb as a target.

Frame and fabric. YETI describes a “crossover frame” but doesn't name the material; OutdoorGearLab's 2022 review reports powder-coated steel legs. The seat is FlexGrid, a mesh YETI says is UV resistant. YETI publishes no denier, so the Trailhead doesn't earn our fabric point. That isn't a finding that the fabric is weak. It means YETI hasn't published the number that would let anyone compare it with the 600D polyester other makers print on their spec sheets.

Warranty. YETI lists the Trailhead Camp Chair under its five-year warranty period, counted from the date of purchase. You “must have purchased the product from a YETI website, store, or authorized dealer,” the product has to be returned to YETI for a claim, and the warranty applies only in the United States. Five years scores 7 on our warranty band: longer than the one-year terms Coleman, Kijaro and Kelty publish for their chairs, and shorter than the lifetime terms ALPS and Guide Gear publish. Parts. None listed. For punctures and ember damage, YETI's FAQ says to contact its Outfitter team “to help with repairs.” That is repair on request, which scores 3. YETI has sold seat and back service kits before, for its discontinued Hondo Base Camp chair, per its chairs FAQ; nothing equivalent is listed for the Trailhead.

What lasts and what wears

We can't tell you how a Trailhead ages, because we haven't owned one. What we can do is read what YETI itself warns about and excludes, which is a fair map of where this chair is exposed.

• Punctures. YETI's FAQ acknowledges that the mesh can be punctured and points owners to the Outfitter team for repairs. The warranty excludes “punctures, scratches, normal wear and tear,” so a puncture is not a warranty claim.
• Embers. The FAQ also says that if an ember lands on the material, damage may occur, and again points to the Outfitter team. Keep the chair back from the fire ring.
• Sun. YETI calls FlexGrid UV resistant. The warranty still excludes “the natural breakdown of colors and materials over extended time and use,” so fading and sun wear are not covered.
• The frame. YETI doesn't publish the frame material or finish. OutdoorGearLab reports powder-coated steel legs; either way, store the chair dry.

The pattern: the seat fabric is the part YETI's own FAQ talks about, it is the part the warranty excludes damage to, and there is no replacement seat to buy. Fit: seat height and back

YETI publishes the Trailhead's overall size, 24.0 inches wide, 29.9 deep and 36.3 tall, and nothing about the seat itself. CleverHiker reports a 16.75-inch seat height. That is under the 17-inch mark our fit rubric rewards, and 2.25 inches lower than the 19-inch seat ALPS publishes for the King Kong. For taller campers, or anyone who finds it hard to stand up from a low seat, that is the Trailhead's biggest practical drawback.

The upside is the back. At 36.3 inches overall it clears our 36-inch high-back mark, and YETI adds color-coded tensioners on the back and arms. The arms are tensioned fabric rather than rigid rails, so they don't earn the rigid-armrest point that helps when you push up to stand. The Trailhead's fit score is 5.

The alternatives it's measured against

ALPS Mountaineering King Kong: more of everything durable

ALPS rates it to 800 lb on powder-coated steel with quilted 600D polyester, publishes a 19-inch seat height and a 24-inch seat width, and warrants it for the life of the product. It weighs 13 lb and packs to 40 x 8 x 9 inches, and ALPS lists a replacement carry bag for it. The trade-offs: ALPS publishes only a 22-inch backrest height, so there is no high-back figure to match the Trailhead's, and the ALPS warranty excludes UV damage and burns. It scores 7.6.

Guide Gear Oversized Camp Chair: same rating, lighter, lifetime guarantee

Guide Gear rates it to 500 lb, the same as the Trailhead, with 600-denier polyester, a 23-inch seat width, a 20-inch seat height, a 39-inch overall height and padding on the neck and shoulders. It weighs 11.5 lb. Sportsman's Guide gives Guide Gear merchandise a Lifetime Guarantee against defects in material and workmanship, but its guarantee page doesn't say whether Amazon purchases qualify. It scores 7.1, matching or beating the Trailhead on every line except repairability: Guide Gear lists no parts or repair route, where YETI at least offers repairs on request.

Who should buy the Trailhead, and who should skip it

Buy it if

• You want a tall back (36.3 inches overall) in a mesh seat YETI calls UV resistant.
• You weigh well under 500 lb and five years of defect coverage from YETI is enough for you.
• You are buying from YETI or an authorized dealer and will keep the receipt, since the warranty depends on it.

Skip it if

• You need a seat 17 inches or higher to get up easily; the reported seat height is 16.75 inches.
• You want a chair you can keep repairing: YETI lists no Trailhead parts.
• You carry your chair far. It weighs 13.3 lb and folds to 43 inches long.
• Durability is the whole reason you are paying more. The King Kong gives you a higher rating, a longer warranty and a listed part.
