We scored every camping mattress, sleeping pad and cot pad in our registry with the Built-to-Last Score. For this category the weights are: build durability 25% (the published denier of the ground-side fabric, plus a point for a foam core, so a puncture still leaves foam under you), the written warranty 20%, repairability 15%, fit and comfort 30% (R-value, thickness, width and a knit or brushed top) and weight 10%. The six self-inflating mattresses below are the ones that suit most tent and car campers, ranked by that score. Every figure is the maker's own, read on 2026-09-22 and linked to its source. We haven't slept on or handled any of them, and the bands behind each score are on our scoring methodology page.

The six mattresses, side by side

Durability rows come first because they decide how many seasons a mattress lasts. Warmth, size and weight come after. A dash means the maker doesn't publish that figure.

Read down the durability rows and the list is closer than the scores suggest. All six have a foam core. Five publish a 75D polyester base; NEMO lists the Roamer's fabric only as “PU stretch polyester,” with no denier, and that missing number costs it three build points. The warranty row splits the list in two: lifetime terms from Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit and NEMO, and 5 years from Exped. Repairability is where the top two part ways.

Why the Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D is the mattress to buy once

The MondoKing 3D and the Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe score identically on four of the five metrics: 8 on build, 10 on warranty, 9 on fit and 8 on weight. The 0.3-point gap between them is all repairability. Therm-a-Rest sells two patch kits for its pads online, the Permanent Home Repair Kit and the Instant Field Repair Kit, and its warranty page links a video for each. Sea to Summit lists no mat parts in its store and handles spare parts through a request form.

That difference matters because of what a lifetime warranty actually covers. Therm-a-Rest's Limited Lifetime Warranty excludes “normal wear, puncture, abrasion, misuse, alteration and abuse,” though the company says it “may be able to complete the repair for a reasonable fee” and runs a repair-first policy. Every warranty on this page is written around defects, not the thorn you didn't see. A mattress you can patch yourself is a mattress that goes back in the tent the same night.

The rest of the spec sheet backs it up. Therm-a-Rest lists 4.25 inches of StrataCore urethane foam in the tech specs (a feature line on the same page says 4 inches of “stabilized loft”), a 50D polyester knit top over a 75D polyester base, vertical sidewalls, and a TwinLock system of two one-way valves, one to inflate and one to deflate. The Large is 77 x 25 inches and weighs 4 lb 6 oz; the XXLarge is 80 x 30 inches at 5 lb 8 oz. It's made in the USA.

What it gives up: the TwinLock valve has no do-it-yourself replacement kit. Therm-a-Rest sells valve kits for its Classic and WingLock valves, but TwinLock problems go to its warranty and repair team. Its R-value of 7 ties the Roamer for the lowest on this page (some Amazon listings still print 8.0 from an older version; we use the maker's current figure). And there's no double. What the R-values on this page mean

R-value is a thermal resistance figure: the higher it is, the better a mattress resists losing your body heat into the ground. The six mattresses here run from 7 (MondoKing 3D, NEMO Roamer) to 10.6 (MegaMat Max). How much weight to put on those numbers depends on how each one was measured.

Use R-value to compare mattresses, not to predict a comfortable temperature: none of these makers pairs its number with a temperature rating, and ASTM says the lab figure won't always match a real night. Where the other five win

Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe: the runner-up, and warmer on paper

The Comfort Deluxe scores 8.0, within 0.3 of the MondoKing, and it has the higher published R-value: 7.7, which Sea to Summit says is ASTM-tested, against 7. It puts 4 inches of polyurethane foam in an “Air Frame” construction under a stretch-knit top, over a solution-dyed 75D woven polyester base with TPU lamination. Sea to Summit says the XPEL valve “allows quick firmness adjustment,” and the pump sack doubles as the storage sack. The Regular Wide is 72 x 25 inches at 66.8 oz; the Large Wide is 78 x 30 inches at 84.3 oz.

Its Limited Lifetime Warranty covers manufacturing defects and excludes normal wear and tear. For anything else, you fill in Sea to Summit's Warranty, Repair, or Spare Part Request form; paid repairs are charged for labor and materials. Two more things to know: Sea to Summit's FAQ says its coupler loops won't work on the Comfort Deluxe, and older Amazon listings quote R 6.5. If warmth matters more to you than a patch kit you can order online, this is the one to buy.

Exped MegaMat Max: the warmest and thickest

No foam mattress in our registry is thicker, and none is warmer. The MegaMat Max has 15 cm (5.9 inches) of open-cell foam, an ASTM R-value of 10.6 and a 77.6 x 30.3-inch surface under a recycled tricot top, over a 75D polyester base. Exped says “the desired firmness can be easily achieved with the Top Up Pump supplied,” and a repair kit comes in the bag. It's the only mattress or pad we score that earns a perfect 10 on fit and comfort.

It ranks third, 0.5 behind the MondoKing, for two reasons: Exped's warranty is 5 years, not lifetime, and the Max weighs 7.4 lb with a 29.5 x 13.8-inch pack. It comes in one size only. For a car camper who sleeps cold, that's an easy trade. Exped MegaMat: the wide single at R 8.1

The standard MegaMat trails the Max by just 0.1. It has 10 cm of foam (3.9 inches by our conversion; Amazon listings round it to 4), an ASTM R-value of 8.1, vertical side walls and the same fabrics. In the LXW size scored here it's 77.6 x 30.3 inches and 5.7 lb, packing to 31.1 x 9.8 inches. MW and LW sizes are narrower (25.6 inches) and lighter. Against the Max, you save 1.7 lb and get a slimmer pack (31.1 x 9.8 inches against 29.5 x 13.8), and give up 5 cm of foam and 2.5 points of R-value.

Exped's 5-year warranty covers defects, and Exped says failures from “normal wear, negligence, and acts of nature can usually be repaired for a nominal charge” in its own workshops. It sells a Field Repair Kit with UV-curing glue and TPU patches, but lists no replacement valve. Exped says its valve is “designed to be directly compatible with NEMO, Sea to Summit, and Mountain Equipment mat valves.”

Exped MegaMat Duo: one mattress for two

The Duo Queen is the MegaMat built wide: 79.9 x 59.8 inches of 10 cm foam in one continuous core, R 8.1, and the same tricot top, 5-year warranty and repair kit. At 11.9 lb and a 31.5 x 11.8-inch pack, it's the heaviest mat on this page, and it needs a tent floor about 60 inches wide. Exped also makes Duo M and Duo LW+ sizes. NEMO Roamer: a lifetime warranty on a thin spec sheet

On comfort specs the Roamer matches the leaders: 4.0 inches of open-cell foam, an R-value of 7, a stretch-knit top and a Laylow valve that NEMO says is for “fine-tuning firmness,” plus a one-way dump valve. Its lifetime warranty covers defects for the original owner with proof of purchase from an authorized NEMO dealer. Singles and Single Wides carry toggles and loops to join two mats, and NEMO also sells Double (78 x 40 inches) and Double Wide (78 x 52 inches) versions.

It ranks last because of what NEMO doesn't publish. There's no fabric denier, no Roamer part in NEMO's store (spare parts and repairs are by request, and NEMO says repairs usually take 4 to 6 weeks), and no stated R-value standard. On 2026-09-22 NEMO's own site showed the Single, Single Wide and Double Wide out of stock, with the Double in stock.

What didn't make this list, and where it went

• Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp (8.1). It outscores everything here except the MondoKing, mostly on repairability: Therm-a-Rest sells a do-it-yourself WingLock valve kit for it as well as the patch kits. But it's 2 inches thick, a pad rather than a mattress, and its home is our best cot pads, along with the TETON Canvas Camp Pad (7.9), which TETON sizes to its own cots.
• Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft (7.9). An air pad 4.6 inches thick at 1 lb 14 oz, with an R-value of 4.7. It scores well on weight and warranty, but it has no foam core, so a puncture leaves nothing under you until it's patched. It belongs with the lightweight pads, not the car-camping mattresses.
• Exped MegaMat Auto (7.5). A MegaMat shaped for vehicles, with cut-outs on the sides. Its natural home is our truck bed and SUV mattresses.
• Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe Double (7.8). A 78 x 52-inch version of the runner-up. It ranks on the couples list, next to the MegaMat Duo.
• Air mattresses. The SoundAsleep Camping Series Queen (3.9) is 9 inches of PVC, but SoundAsleep publishes no R-value or weight, and its 1-year warranty excludes punctures and holes from use. Whether air is ever the better buy is the subject of our self-inflating vs air mattress comparison.

How to choose a camping mattress you won't have to replace

Most mattress shopping starts with thickness and comfort. Start instead with the three things that decide whether a mattress is still in service in five years, then narrow by warmth, size and weight. For every mattress guide and comparison in one place, start at the camping mattresses hub.

1. The fabric under you, and what's inside it

The ground side takes the abrasion, so our build score reads the bottom fabric's published denier. Five of the six mattresses here publish a 75D polyester base; NEMO doesn't publish one for the Roamer. Then look at the core. All six are self-inflating foam, which earns a point in our build score: a puncture leaves foam between you and the ground rather than bare fabric. Air-only pads and air mattresses don't get that point.

2. The warranty, read for what it leaves out

Terms here run from lifetime (Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit, NEMO) to 5 years (Exped), and all of them are written around defects. Therm-a-Rest excludes wear, punctures and abrasion but offers fee-based repair. Sea to Summit and NEMO exclude normal wear and tear. NEMO covers the original owner with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. Exped says it can usually repair normal-wear failures for a nominal charge. Keep the receipt and buy from a seller the maker recognizes.

3. Whether you can fix it yourself

Punctures are the likeliest failure and the one warranties exclude, so check for a patch kit you can actually buy. Therm-a-Rest sells two, Exped sells its Field Repair Kit, and NEMO puts patches in the box. Sea to Summit handles parts by request. Valves are the gap: none of the six has a replacement valve its maker lists for do-it-yourself fitting. 4. Warmth: compare R-values, don't read them as a forecast

Higher is warmer, and a figure tied to ASTM F3340 is meant to be comparable across brands. The picks run from R 7 to R 10.6, all well above the R 2.0 Therm-a-Rest gives its Z Lite SOL foam pad, which Therm-a-Rest suggests layering under another pad for extra warmth and puncture protection. If you camp in shoulder seasons or winter, the MegaMat Max and MegaMat lead this list on paper.

5. Thickness and width

The foam here runs from 3.9 inches (Exped's 10 cm mats) to 5.9 inches (MegaMat Max). Width matters as much as thickness if you roll around: the base sizes are 25 inches wide, and the 30-inch options are the MondoKing XXLarge, the Comfort Deluxe Large Wide, the Roamer Single Wide and the MegaMat LXW and Max. Check length against your height too; the Roamer Single is 76 inches long and the MondoKing XXLarge 80.

6. Weight and packed size come last

These are car-camping mattresses. Single weights run from 3 lb 16 oz (NEMO's minimum weight for the Roamer Single) to 7.4 lb (MegaMat Max), and the Duo Queen is 11.9 lb. Packed, the MondoKing Large is 26 x 10.3 inches and the MegaMat Max 29.5 x 13.8 inches, so check your trunk if space is tight.
