How we picked

Every mat here comes from our mattress registry and carries its Built-to-Last Score: the ground-side fabric and a foam core count 25%, the written warranty 20%, repairability 15%, fit and comfort 30% (R-value, thickness, width and top fabric) and weight 10%. For this page we read one group of specs harder than usual: the support facts a maker can actually put in writing. How much foam is under you? How wide and long is the surface? Can you set the firmness, and did the maker build something to do it? We shortlisted self-inflating foam mattresses only, ranked the one with the most foam first, and ranked the rest by score. What a mattress can and can't do for your back

We aren't doctors, and no camping mattress treats back pain. The clearest single study we found is a randomized, double-blind trial published in The Lancet in 2003 by Kovacs and colleagues. It gave 313 adults with chronic non-specific low-back pain either a firm mattress or a medium-firm one, rated on a firmness scale from the European Committee for Standardization that runs from 1.0 (firmest) to 10.0 (softest): 2.3 for the firm group, 5.6 for the medium-firm. After 90 days, the medium-firm group had better outcomes for pain in bed, pain on rising and disability. The authors' conclusion: “A mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic non-specific low-back pain.”

A 2021 literature review of 39 articles by Caggiari and colleagues (J Orthop Traumatol) landed in the same place, concluding that “a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and rachis alignment,” rachis meaning the spine. The same review warns that claims of mattresses with therapeutic properties “are not supported by enough evidence,” and notes its own limits: the studies differed, and the type of low back pain was “poorly determined.”

The US National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS, part of the National Institutes of Health) says to see a doctor if back pain doesn't improve after a few weeks, or if it comes with numbness and tingling, severe pain that doesn't improve with medication, pain after a fall or injury, trouble urinating, weakness, pain or numbness in your legs, fever, or weight loss you didn't intend. A camping mattress is somewhere to sleep, not a treatment.

The support specs, side by side

All five have a self-inflating foam core, and four publish a 75D polyester base; NEMO publishes no denier for the Roamer. Warranties split three ways: limited lifetime (Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit), lifetime (NEMO) and 5 years (both Expeds). On the support specs, one mattress stands apart. The MegaMat Max has 1.65 inches more foam than the next-thickest mat here, and at 30.3 inches it ties the MegaMat LXW as the widest single mattress we score.

Thickness: how much foam is between you and the ground

Thickness is the one support number every maker here publishes. The MegaMat Max has 15 cm (5.9 inches). The MondoKing 3D has 4.25 inches in Therm-a-Rest's tech specs (a feature line on the same page says 4 inches of “stabilized loft”). The Comfort Deluxe and the Roamer have 4 inches each, and the standard MegaMat 10 cm (3.9 inches). Amazon listings round Exped's figures to 6 and 4 inches; we use the maker's metric numbers and convert them.

What thickness tells you is depth: how much foam and air there is to compress before your hip or shoulder meets the ground. It doesn't tell you how firm the mat feels, which depends on the foam and how much air you put in. Among the four mats between 3.9 and 4.25 inches, the difference is a third of an inch, so we let the Built-to-Last score order them rather than the tape measure. Firmness you can set yourself

Since no maker publishes a firmness rating, the useful question is whether you can set the firmness yourself, and whether the maker built something for it. Three of the five say so in writing:

• Exped MegaMat Max and MegaMat: “The desired firmness can be easily achieved with the Top Up Pump,” which comes in the box with both.
• Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe: the XPEL valve “allows quick firmness adjustment,” per Sea to Summit.
• NEMO Roamer: a Laylow micro-adjustable valve for “fine-tuning firmness,” plus a separate one-way dump valve.

Therm-a-Rest fits the MondoKing 3D with its TwinLock system, one one-way valve to inflate and another to deflate, but doesn't pitch it as a firmness control. On any self-inflating mat, the air you add or let out changes how firm it feels; the difference is how finely the hardware lets you do it. The Caggiari review also summarizes a study of an inflatable mattress system in which changing the inflation pressure changed spinal alignment, with “limited physiological consequences.” Treat a firmness valve as a way to find what feels right to you, not as a therapy.

Width, length and getting up

A mat that's too narrow or too short leaves you sleeping curled up or with a knee off the edge, whatever its thickness. The MegaMat Max comes only in LXW, 77.6 x 30.3 inches. The MondoKing 3D XXLarge is 80 x 30 inches, the Comfort Deluxe Large Wide 78 x 30, the Roamer Single Wide 80 x 30 and the MegaMat LXW 77.6 x 30.3. The base sizes of the others are about 25 inches wide. The MegaMat and the MondoKing have vertical side walls, which their makers say maximize the usable surface.

One thing no mattress changes is height. A camp mattress sits on the ground, and if lowering yourself down and getting back up is the hard part of your night, a cot is the tool for that. Why the Exped MegaMat Max ranks first

On the facts this page ranks, the MegaMat Max leads every row. It has the most foam we list, 15 cm (5.9 inches) of open-cell polyurethane, on the widest single surface we score. Exped ships the Top-Up Pump for setting firmness. Its ASTM R-value of 10.6 is the highest in our registry, and it's the only mattress or pad that scores a perfect 10 on our fit and comfort metric. The top is a recycled 50D tricot polyester; the base a recycled 75D polyester, both TPU-laminated.

We rank it first knowing it isn't the top Built-to-Last score. It finishes at 7.8, and the MondoKing 3D at 8.3. The 0.5-point gap is Exped's 5-year warranty against Therm-a-Rest's limited lifetime term, and the Max's 7.4 lb against 4 lb 6 oz for a MondoKing Large, partly offset by the Max's better fit score. On repairs, Exped includes a repair kit, sells a Field Repair Kit with UV-curing glue and TPU patches, and repairs mats in its own workshops, saying failures from “normal wear, negligence, and acts of nature can usually be repaired for a nominal charge.” It lists no replacement valve.

Who should skip which

• Exped MegaMat Max: skip it if you want a lifetime warranty (Exped gives 5 years), if 7.4 lb and a 29.5 x 13.8-inch pack are more than you want to carry, or if two of you need to fit two single mats in a small tent.
• Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D: skip it if you want a valve you can replace yourself; the TwinLock valve has no do-it-yourself kit, and valve problems go to Therm-a-Rest's warranty and repair team.
• Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe: skip it if you want to buy a patch kit or valve straight from the maker; Sea to Summit handles parts by request.
• Exped MegaMat: skip it if thickness is your priority; at 10 cm (3.9 inches) it's the thinnest mat on this page.
• NEMO Roamer: skip it if you want published fabric specs or listed parts; NEMO gives neither, and on 2026-09-22 its site showed the Single out of stock.

Decide what actually bothers you

Different complaints point to different specs. Feeling the ground through the mat points to thickness: the MegaMat Max has the most foam here. A mat that feels too hard or too soft points to firmness control: Exped's pump, Sea to Summit's XPEL valve or NEMO's Laylow valve. Rolling off the edge points to a 30-inch width. Trouble getting up from the ground points to a cot, not a mattress.

Foam before air

Every pick here is self-inflating foam, which earns a point in our build score because a puncture leaves foam under you instead of bare fabric. We left out the Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft, a 4.6-inch air pad, and the air mattresses in our registry. None of those air mattresses publishes an R-value, and their warranties are 30 days (Napier), 1 year (SoundAsleep, excluding punctures) and 3 years (Luno). Warmth still counts

R-value doesn't change how a mat supports you, but a mattress too cold to sleep on is no help at all. The picks here run from R 7 (MondoKing 3D, Roamer) to R 10.6 (MegaMat Max). Exped ties its figures to ASTM; Sea to Summit calls its 7.7 ASTM-tested; Therm-a-Rest names ASTM F3340-18 in its product FAQ; NEMO doesn't name a standard. Buy the mat you can repair

Punctures are the common failure, and none of these warranties covers them. Therm-a-Rest sells two patch kits online and repairs other damage for a fee; Exped sells a Field Repair Kit and repairs mats in its workshops; NEMO puts patches in the box; Sea to Summit handles parts and paid repairs by request. None lists a replacement valve for do-it-yourself fitting on these mats.
