Best Camping Mattress for Side Sleepers (2026): Ranked by Thickness and Build

How we picked

We started with every single-sleeper tent pad and mattress in our registry and kept the ones at least 3 inches thick, the thickness Therm-a-Rest's own buying guide calls “comfy and supportive for side sleepers.” Six made it, from 3.9 to 5.9 inches. Each carries a Built-to-Last Score: build durability (face-fabric denier, plus a point for a foam core) counts 25%, the written warranty 20%, parts and repair 15%, fit and comfort 30% and weight 10%. The bands are on our scoring methodology page, and every figure below is the maker's own, read on 2026-09-22. We haven't slept on any of these mats.

We ranked picks two to six by that score. The #1 spot is the one exception: it goes to the Exped MegaMat Max, the only mat here with a perfect fit and comfort score and 1.3 inches thicker than anything else on the list, because thickness is what a side sleeper is shopping for. The Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D scores 0.5 higher overall, mostly on its lifetime warranty. If that matters more to you than the extra foam, buy the MondoKing; we say so again below.

The six mats, side by side

Fabric, warranty and parts come first because they decide how long a mat lasts. Thickness and R-value follow. A dash means the maker doesn't publish that figure.

What a side sleeper is actually buying

Ask the makers what a side sleeper needs and they answer with thickness. Therm-a-Rest's buying guide says its 3-inch XLite NXT is “comfy and supportive for side sleepers,” and it markets the 4.6-inch NeoLoft as “a side sleeper's dream.” So thickness is the first spec to read on this page, and the one that set the entry line. We make no claims about hips, joints or backs; we can only tell you how much mat each maker says you get.

Construction changes what thickness means. Sea to Summit's buying guide puts it plainly: because the comfort of a self-inflating pad “comes from the foam core, the thickness of a self-inflating pad is a key factor in how comfortable it is,” and that “is not necessarily the case with air-filled pads.” So compare the five foam mats here with each other by thickness, and judge the one air pad, the NeoLoft, by its own design. Foam also matters for durability. If a self-inflating mat punctures, the foam is still under you; if an air-only pad punctures, you're on the ground until you patch it. The top fabric is the third spec. Every pick here has a knit, stretch-knit or tricot top. Sea to Summit says its stretch-knit top “conforms around your body,” and Therm-a-Rest says the same of its knit. We can't confirm how that feels, so it earns one point in our fit score and no more.

Why the Exped MegaMat Max takes the top spot

The MegaMat Max is the thickest and warmest mat in our registry: 15 cm (5.9 inches) of 16 kg/m³ open-cell foam with an R-value of 10.6, which Exped lists as an ASTM figure. It is the only single size Exped sells, 197 x 77 cm (77.6 x 30.3 inches), and Exped says its vertical side walls “ensure the largest possible sleeping surface,” so the full width is usable rather than tapering at the edges. That combination earns a 10 of 10 on fit and comfort, the only perfect fit score in our mattress registry.

The build is sound. The bottom is recycled 75D polyester with a TPU laminate, the same base denier as the MondoKing and the Comfort Deluxe, under a 50D tricot top. A repair kit and a top-up pump come in the box, Exped sells a Field Repair Kit separately, and it repairs mats in its own workshops. Where it falls short is the paperwork: Exped's warranty is 5 years, against lifetime terms from Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit and NEMO, and Exped lists no replacement valve. That is why it scores 7.8 overall, behind two lifetime-warranty mats.

Skip it if you share a small tent. At 30.3 inches wide it takes more floor than a 25-inch single, and 7.4 lb makes it a mat for the car, not the trail. Where the other five win

Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D: the buy-once pick (8.3)

The MondoKing 3D is the highest-scoring mat on this page and our top camping mattress overall. Therm-a-Rest lists 4.25 inches (11 cm) of StrataCore foam in its tech specs (a feature bullet on the same page says 4 inches), with vertical sidewalls, a 50D stretch-knit top over a 75D polyester base, and an R-value of 7. The difference from the Max is the warranty: a limited lifetime term with a repair-first policy, and Therm-a-Rest may repair damage the warranty doesn't cover for a fee. Its TwinLock valve has no do-it-yourself kit, so valve problems go to the warranty and repair team. The Large is 77 x 25 inches; side sleepers who want the Max's width can buy the XXLarge at 80 x 30. Skip it if you want one shared mattress for two; there is no double.

Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe: warmest lifetime-warranty mat (8.0)

The Comfort Deluxe is 10 cm (4 inches) of self-inflating foam with an R-value of 7.7, which Sea to Summit describes as ASTM tested, the highest R-value of any lifetime-warranty mat here. It has a stretch-knit top over a solution-dyed 75D base, and the pump sack doubles as the stuff sack. It sits 0.3 behind the MondoKing, close enough that the choice comes down to details: the Regular Wide is 72 x 25 inches at 66.8 oz, the Large Wide 78 x 30. The weak spot is parts: Sea to Summit lists none online and handles spare parts and paid repairs through a request form. Skip it if you want to buy a valve or patch kit straight from the maker.

Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft: the light one (7.9)

The NeoLoft is the only air pad on the list and the lightest by far: 1 lb 14 oz in Regular Wide, packing to 11.5 x 6 inches. It is 4.6 inches thick, with raised side rails that Therm-a-Rest says “cradle you towards its center to prevent roll-offs,” a 50D knit top and a limited lifetime warranty. Its R-value of 4.7 is the lowest here, and without foam inside, a puncture leaves you on the ground until it's patched (a repair kit comes in the box). Buy it if you carry your pad any distance; skip it if you camp among thorns or sharp gravel.

Exped MegaMat: the Max's thinner sibling (7.7)

The MegaMat uses the same fabrics, foam density, repair kit and 5-year warranty as the Max, in 10 cm (3.9 inches) instead of 15, with an ASTM R-value of 8.1. It comes in three sizes where the Max has one: the LXW we score is 77.6 x 30.3 inches and 5.7 lb, while the MW (72.0 x 25.6 inches, 4.6 lb) and LW (77.6 x 25.6 inches, 5.0 lb) fit narrower tents. It sits just 0.1 behind the Max overall, so if 5.9 inches is more mat than your car or tent can take, this is the Exped to buy.

NEMO Roamer: two singles that link (7.2)

The Roamer is 4 inches of Flow Core foam with an R-value of 7, a stretch-knit top and NEMO's lifetime warranty. Singles and Single Wides link with built-in toggles and loops, and NEMO's Laylow micro-adjustable valve sits beside a one-way dump valve. It ranks last because NEMO publishes no fabric denier (the fabric is listed only as “PU stretch polyester”) and lists no parts online. NEMO's site showed the Single, Single Wide and Double Wide out of stock on 2026-09-22. What didn't make this list, and where it went

• SoundAsleep Camping Series Queen (3.9). At 9 inches it is the thickest mattress in our registry, but it is PVC air with no published R-value, fabric thickness or weight, and a 1-year warranty that excludes punctures and holes from use. Thickness alone doesn't earn a place.
• Exped MegaMat Duo Queen and Sea to Summit Comfort Deluxe Double. Both are 10 cm of foam, sized for two. They rank on the couples list.
• Vehicle mattresses. The Exped MegaMat Auto (10 cm of foam) and the Luno and Napier air mattresses are shaped for cargo areas and truck beds, and rank on our truck bed and SUV mattress picks.
• Thin pads. The Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp, ALPS Flexcore and TETON Canvas Camp Pad are 2 inches thick and the Z Lite SOL is 0.75 inches, all under the 3-inch line. They are better used on a cot.

How to choose a camping mattress as a side sleeper

Start with thickness, because that's what you're buying, then check the four things that decide whether a thick mat lasts. For every mattress guide and comparison in one place, start at the camping mattresses hub.

1. Thickness, read from the maker's spec sheet

Every pick here is at least 3.9 inches thick, above the 3 inches Therm-a-Rest calls side-sleeper friendly. Read the figure from the maker, not a retail listing: Amazon listings round the MegaMat Max up to 6 inches and the MegaMat to 4 inches, while Exped publishes 15 cm and 10 cm. Therm-a-Rest's own MondoKing page gives both 4.25 inches and 4 inches.

2. Foam or air

Five of the six picks are self-inflating foam, where thickness is the comfort, per Sea to Summit, and a puncture still leaves foam under your hip. The NeoLoft is air: 4.6 inches at under 2 lb, with nothing under you if it goes flat. If you car camp, the weight difference rarely matters; if you carry your bed, it does.

3. Width and shape

Width comes second. Therm-a-Rest's guide describes a broad sleep surface as one that “accommodates side sleepers and those who toss and turn at night.” Our picks run from 25 inches (MondoKing Large, Comfort Deluxe Regular Wide, Roamer Single) to 30.3 inches (both Exped LXW mats), and Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit and NEMO each sell a 30-inch version. Vertical side walls, which Exped and Therm-a-Rest both use here, keep the edge from tapering. Measure your tent floor first: two 30-inch mats need 60 inches.

4. Warranty and parts: a thick mat is a big purchase

Therm-a-Rest and Sea to Summit give limited lifetime warranties, NEMO a lifetime warranty, and Exped 5 years. Every one is written against defects, not wear. Parts differ more than terms: Therm-a-Rest and Exped sell patch kits, Exped repairs mats in its own workshops, and Sea to Summit and NEMO handle parts and repairs by request. 5. R-value is about temperature, not sleeping position

R-value measures how well a mat resists heat flowing from you into the ground, and it doesn't change with how you lie. Sea to Summit's guide suggests R 0 to 2 for summer, 2 to 3 down to a light frost, 3 to 4 for a hard frost and 4 or more for winter. Every pick here is 4.7 or higher.
