Self-Inflating vs Air Mattress: Which Camping Bed Lasts Longer?

The verdict

How each one works

Self-inflating. The foam does two jobs: it gives the mattress its shape and support, and it traps air so the shell insulates. Sea to Summit puts it plainly in its buying guide: because the comfort and support of a self-inflating pad comes from the foam core, its thickness is a key factor in how comfortable it is. Both self-inflating mattresses here are about 4 inches of foam: the Exped MegaMat is 10 cm (3.9 in) and the MondoKing 3D 4.25 in.

Air. An air mattress or pad gets all of its loft from air. That makes it lighter and smaller packed, and it means thickness isn't the whole comfort story, as Sea to Summit notes. Air beds range from ultralight backpacking-style pads like the Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft (4.6 in, with raised side rails) to 9-inch PVC queen beds like the SoundAsleep Camping Series.

Warmth

On paper, the foam mattresses are warmer. Exped lists an ASTM R-value of 8.1 for the MegaMat and Therm-a-Rest lists 7 for the MondoKing 3D. The NeoLoft air pad is R 4.7, and the SoundAsleep air bed publishes no R-value at all, like every full-size air mattress in our registry. For scale, Sea to Summit's guide suggests R 4 or more for winter, so every rated mattress here clears that bar, and the two foam mats clear it by a lot.

What a leak does

This is the difference that matters most to a buy-once buyer, and it's simple. When a self-inflating mattress leaks, the foam is still there: you lose firmness, not the whole bed. When an air mattress leaks, you're lying on the shell. SoundAsleep's own warranty says it doesn't cover punctures and holes from use, so a hole is yours to fix.

Both designs can be patched, and all three makers here include or sell a patch kit or publish repair help. Warranty and parts

Warranty terms follow the maker more than the design. Therm-a-Rest backs both the MondoKing 3D (foam) and the NeoLoft (air) with a limited lifetime warranty and repairs first. Exped gives the MegaMat 5 years. SoundAsleep gives its camping air bed 1 year on manufacturing defects. The pattern in our registry is that the premium pad makers, foam or air, write the long warranties, while inexpensive PVC air beds carry short ones.

Weight and packed size

Air wins here, and by a lot at the pad end. The NeoLoft Regular Wide weighs 1 lb 14 oz and packs to 11.5 x 6.0 inches. The MondoKing 3D Large weighs 4 lb 6 oz and packs to 26 x 10.3 inches; the MegaMat LXW weighs 5.7 lb. Sea to Summit says the same about its own line: its air mats run around 20% lighter and 30% more compact than comparable self-inflating mats. SoundAsleep doesn't publish a weight for its queen air bed.

If you camp from the car, weight hardly matters and the self-inflating mats are the better buy. If you carry your bed from the car to a walk-in site or pack it with other gear, the air pad earns its place.

Thickness and comfort

Thickness is the only published comfort fact, and it cuts both ways. The SoundAsleep is 9 inches, the thickest here, but a tall PVC air bed has no insulation rating. The NeoLoft is 4.6 inches with raised side rails. The foam mats sit at about 4 inches, with vertical sidewalls (MondoKing 3D) and tricot or knit tops.
