What to buy first

A table with a published load rating, a top that won't warp, a height that fits your chairs, and a warranty that outlasts the vehicle it rides in. Two tables in our registry cover most people, and they are the two highest scorers we have. The Camp Time Roll-a-Table is rated to 100 lb by CampTime, adjusts through 12 heights from 19 to 30 inches, rolls into a 32 x 5.5-inch bundle at 10 lb, and carries a warranty on defects with no time limit, plus a parts list that runs from leg tips to a replacement roll-top. The Lifetime 80387 is the heavy-duty alternative: a 48 x 24-inch HDPE top on a powder-coated steel frame, listed at 1,500 lb evenly distributed on the Target listing sold by Lifetime, adjustable to 24, 29 or 34 inches, with a 10-year limited warranty on that same listing. How the category divides

Camping tables are the dining tables: aluminum roll-tops, folding slab tables and modular tables. ALPS Mountaineering's Overlanding Table and Dining Table XL and the Coleman Pack-Away 4-in-1 sit here. Roll-up tables are the subset whose slatted tops roll into a bag, which is why they pack small: the ALPS Camp Table packs to 28 x 7.5 x 4 inches at 6 lb. Camp kitchens and cook stations add a surface meant for a stove, plus side tables, racks and sometimes a sink or lantern pole. GCI's Slim-Fold and Master Cook Stations, the Kamp-Rite Kwik Pantry and the Camp Chef Sherpa are the examples we score, ranked in the best camp kitchen tables. What actually decides durability

Four things, in this order. A published load rating. Plenty of makers don't give one: ALPS publishes no load rating for any of its three tables in our registry, and Blackstone publishes none for its XL Griddle Stand. When there is no number, we score the table that way rather than guess. The tabletop material. Aluminum and steel tops earn more in our scoring than HDPE, laminate, fiberboard or ABS plastic, and Coleman's own customer-care team says prolonged rain can warp the 4-in-1's laminate top.

The warranty in writing. The spread is wide. ALPS warrants its tables for the life of the product, CampTime's warranty on defects has no time limit, and Picnic Time offers a lifetime guarantee. Helinox gives 5 years and GCI 3. Coleman, Camp Chef, Kamp-Rite and Blackstone give 1. The maker of the Mountain Summit Gear roll-top publishes no warranty for it at all. Replacement parts. ALPS lists replacement tops and legs for its tables by part number, and CampTime lists legs, cross bars, leg tips and a replacement roll-top. Coleman says it doesn't sell the 4-in-1's legs or connecting bracket.

Features don't buy durability. A sink, a lantern pole or extra side tables add weight and parts to carry; they don't add warranty. GCI's Master Cook Station, with its sink, carries the same 3-year limited term as the simpler Slim-Fold and weighs 3.5 lb more. The weights behind every table score are published on how we score.

The mistake buyers make

Putting a lit stove on a table nobody rated for it, and loading it past a number nobody read. Lifetime publishes no heat rating for the 80387's HDPE top, and Camp Chef publishes no stove rating for the Sherpa's aluminum roll-top. GCI does rate its cook-station tops for stoves and griddles, but only to 48 lb. Weigh your stove or griddle with its fuel before you trust any top with it.

The quieter mistake is height. A 22-inch high-seat chair at a 28-inch table leaves 6 inches between seat and top, and a 15-inch Helinox table is a side table, not a dinner table.
