Every table here has legs its maker publishes as adjustable. The order follows our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs the published load rating and tabletop material, the written warranty and listed parts before fit and weight; the bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not used these tables, and every figure links to the page it came from.

One thing to notice before you read the rankings: the number of settings and the quality of the table are unrelated. The table with twelve heights weighs 10 lb and holds 100 lb; the table with three heights holds 1,500 lb. Decide which of those two numbers you are shopping for.

What adjustable legs are actually for

Matching the height to the job. Roughly: 19 to 24 inches suits sitting in a camp chair, 27 to 29 inches suits eating at a chair, and 33 to 36 inches suits standing to chop or run a stove. Levelling on ground that is not flat. This is the use people discover second and value most. Campsites slope. A table with independently adjustable legs can be made level; one with fixed legs needs a rock under a foot.

Why the Roll-a-Table is first

It is the highest-scoring table on this site at 7.6, and the adjustable legs are the reason. CampTime publishes twelve settings — 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 inches — which is the widest published range in the category and covers sitting, eating and standing on one table. It weighs 10 lb, rolls to a 32-inch by 5.5-inch cylinder, and CampTime rates the top to 100 lb.

The part that earns the score, though, is the parts list: standard and adjustable table legs, the Roll-a-Table cross bar, leg tips and even blemished tops, under a manufacturer's warranty against defects with no time limit. A telescoping leg is the component most likely to fail on any adjustable table, and CampTime is the only maker here that sells you a new one.

Two honest notes: CampTime itself advises bracing the table at settings above 28 inches, and a slatted roll-top is not the surface you want a full pot of water on. For that, take the Lifetime.

The rest of the list

Lifetime 4-Foot Adjustable Height Table (#2). Three heights (24, 29 and 34 inches) with one-hand adjustment, a 48 x 24-inch UV-protected HDPE top rated to 1,500 lb evenly distributed, a rust-resistant powder-coated steel frame, 23.5 lb and a 10-year limited warranty. It is an institutional folding table, which is exactly why it is the toughest thing on this page — and note its own spec tab lists 24, 29 or 36 inches for one colorway while the feature list says 34, a discrepancy we flag rather than resolve. Parts are ordered through Lifetime's customer service rather than listed online.

ALPS Mountaineering Overlanding Table (#3). 29, 31 and 36 inches from multiple leg positions, on an aluminum roll-top with steel legs at 17 lb 4 oz, under ALPS's lifetime defect warranty — and ALPS sells both the Overlanding Table Legs and the Overlanding Table Top as parts, which almost no table maker does. ALPS publishes no load rating for any of its tables, which is what keeps it third.

Coleman Pack-Away 4-in-1 (#4). Three height settings plus four layouts — square, buffet, bi-level or two separate 31.5 x 15.7-inch tables — folding into its own case at 12 lb. Coleman's Consumer Care states a 300 lb capacity and also states that the legs and connecting bracket are not sold. One-year warranty.

Blackstone XL Griddle Stand (#5). Height-adjustable folding legs with locking clips and a removable side shelf, sized for Blackstone's 17 and 22-inch tabletop griddles. It is on this page because it adjusts and because a griddle stand is where adjustability earns its keep; it finishes last because Blackstone publishes no heights, no load rating and no weight for it. What didn't make the list

• Kamp-Rite Kwik Set Table with Benches. Kamp-Rite describes the table as adjustable height but lists no settings, and publishes a 27.5-inch set-up height. It is ranked in our chair and table sets.
• ALPS Dining Table XL and Camp Table. Excellent roll-tops with parts you can buy, at one fixed height each (28 and 27 inches).
• Helinox Table One Hard Top. 1 lb 13 oz and 110 lb rated, at a fixed 15 inches — the right table for a low chair and the wrong one for a stove. See the Table One review.
• Both GCI cook stations. Fixed working heights (28 and 32.3 inches) with griddle-rated tops and storage racks. They lead our camp kitchen rankings instead.

How to choose a table with adjustable legs

Write down the heights you actually need

Sitting in a camp chair: 19 to 24 inches. Eating: 27 to 29. Standing to prep or cook: 33 to 36. Then check the maker's published settings include yours — only CampTime's twelve settings and Lifetime's three cover more than one of those bands.

Check the load rating separately

Adjustability and strength are independent here: 100 lb (CampTime), 300 lb (Coleman), 1,500 lb (Lifetime), unpublished (ALPS, Blackstone). A stove full of water is heavier than people expect, and a griddle plus fuel heavier still.

Look for legs in the parts list

A telescoping leg has more to go wrong than a fixed one. CampTime sells legs, cross bars and leg tips; ALPS sells legs and tops; Lifetime handles parts by phone; Coleman states its legs are not sold. That ordering is most of this page's ranking.

Think about what the feet stand on

Adjustable legs level a table on a slope, and on soft ground they also sink. A flat plate, a jar lid or a square of plywood under each foot keeps the height you set.

Match the table to the chairs you already own
