Every chair here has a seat height of 18 inches or more, published by its maker (for the GCI rocker, in GCI's own comparison chart). Within that group the order follows our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs rated capacity, frame and fabric, the written warranty and listed replacement parts before comfort and weight. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We made one exception, for the #1 pick, and explain it below. We haven't sat in any of these chairs: every number on this page comes from a linked maker or dealer page.

The seat heights, side by side

Seat height is the first row because it's the reason this page exists. The rows under it decide whether the chair is still in your truck in five years: the maker's rated capacity, the warranty and whether any part is sold. A dash means the maker doesn't publish that figure.

Why seat height is the spec that decides it

Research on standing up from chairs explains why a couple of inches matter. In a 2013 study of 55 community-dwelling older adults (average age 70), participants completed significantly more stands in the 30-second chair stand test from seats set at 100%, 110% and 120% of their lower-leg length than from a standard 43-centimeter (about 17-inch) chair (Kuo, Aging Clinical and Experimental Research). An earlier Duke University study had younger and older adults rise from four chair heights. As the seats got lower, people sped up their forward trunk lean to overcome the mechanical difficulty, and the older group changed how they moved at the lowest heights (Schenkman and colleagues, Clinical Biomechanics, 1996).

Neither study used camp chairs, and neither sets one right height for everyone. Both point the same way, though: relative to your own legs, a lower seat makes standing up harder. Most of the steel quad and club chairs we score publish seats between 17.7 and 20 inches, near or just above that 17-inch standard. Packable chairs sit lower: Big Agnes publishes a 15-inch seat for its Skyline UL, GCI lists 16 inches for its ComPack Rocker, and Helinox doesn't publish a seat height for its Chair One at all. The seven chairs on this page run from 18 to 22 inches.

Why a 6.6 is ranked first

Our rubric gives a chair one fit point for a seat of 17 inches or more. A 17-inch seat and a 22-inch seat earn the same point. That works for a general roundup and fails on a page about seat height, so we moved the Guide Gear Oversized Tall Director's Camp Chair to #1 on seat height alone. Its 22-inch seat (Guide Gear's page literally reads “Set Height: 22”, which we take to be a typo for seat height) is 2 inches above the next chairs on this list.

So the choice between the two Guide Gear chairs is simple. Buy the Tall Director if the chair rides in the car and goes 20 feet to the fire: the extra 2 inches of seat are the point, and its padded armrests and side table come with it. Buy the Oversized Camp Chair if you carry your chair any distance. It scores 0.5 higher, its 20-inch seat ties for second-highest on this page, and it has a 23-inch-wide seat. Either way, the lifetime guarantee is published on Sportsman's Guide's own site and doesn't say whether a Guide Gear chair bought on Amazon qualifies, which is worth knowing before you rely on it.

The ALPS King Kong sits at #2 because it's the best-built chair here by our score (7.6). ALPS rates it to 800 lb, uses quilted 600D polyester, backs it with a limited lifetime warranty and sells a replacement carry bag for it. Its 19-inch seat is 3 inches lower than the Tall Director's, and its 24-inch seat width ties the Kijaro XXL for the widest on the page, which makes it the pick for a bigger frame. Skip it if you carry your chair far: it weighs 13 lb and packs to 40 inches long.

The rest of the list

STRONGBACK Elite (#4). Its 18-inch seat is the lowest on this page, and STRONGBACK says it suits people 5 feet 8 inches and taller. It earns its place with a feature no other chair here publishes: steel-framed armrests, which give you something rigid to push against, alongside a frame-integrated lumbar support. STRONGBACK rates it to 300 lb, so skip it if you're close to that. Its warranty is 2 years when you buy on Amazon (sold by Amazon or STRONGBACK) and 3 years direct, with fabric limited to one year. GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker XL (#5). GCI's chart lists a 20-inch seat and padded solid armrests, and GCI rates it to 400 lb, the top rating in its rocker lineup. The catch for this page is the rocking itself: the seat moves as you shift your weight forward to stand. Whether that helps or hinders is personal. If balance is your concern, choose a fixed frame. Kelty Deluxe Lounge (#6). A 19-inch seat with three recline positions and quilted 600D polyester, rated to 400 lb by Kelty. Kelty covers furniture for one year, which holds its score down. Kijaro Dual Lock XXL (#7). A 19.5-inch seat, a 24-inch seat width and a 38.98-inch overall height, rated to 400 lb. Kijaro says it locks both open and closed. The warranty is one year and excludes UV damage, and Kijaro publishes no fabric denier.

What didn't make the list

• LivingXL 1000-lb. Capacity Chair. A 20-inch seat, 26.5 inches wide, rated to 1,000 lb stationary. DXL, which sells LivingXL as its house brand, publishes no warranty for it, only a 90-day return policy. For a buyer who wants a chair for years, no written warranty keeps it off this page. • ALPS Mountaineering Rocking Chair. ALPS publishes a 21-inch seat height at the front edge and 16 inches at the back, a 5-inch slope, and the chair weighs 17 lb 8 oz.
• GCI Outdoor RoadTrip Rocker. A 20-inch seat, molded solid armrests and a 39-inch overall height, but GCI rates it to 250 lb.
• Coleman Big & Tall Quad. A 19-inch seat and a 600 lb rating, but a one-year warranty, and Coleman sells no chair parts.
• YETI Trailhead. YETI doesn't publish a seat height. CleverHiker reports 16.75 inches, below this page's 18-inch floor.

How to choose a high-seat camping chair

Measure your legs, then read the seat height

The 2013 study above measured seat height against each person's lower-leg length, which is close to the distance from the floor to the back of your knee. Measure it in the shoes you camp in. A chair whose published seat height is at or above that number puts you in the range where the study's participants did best. On soft grass or sand the legs of any chair can settle, so a little extra height is a margin, not a waste.

Find out where the height is measured

ALPS is the only maker here that publishes two seat heights, front and back: 17.5 and 14 inches for its Escape chair, 21 and 16 inches for its Rocking Chair. Every other maker on this page publishes one number and doesn't say where it was taken. A seat that slopes back sits you lower at the hips than the headline figure suggests. If a listing gives one number, treat it as the front edge until the maker says otherwise.

Rigid armrests beat fabric arms

Pushing up with your arms takes load off your knees, but only if the armrest doesn't give. STRONGBACK describes its Elite's armrests as steel-framed, and GCI's chart lists the Freestyle Rocker XL's as padded and solid. Guide Gear calls the Tall Director's armrests padded foam without saying whether they're rigid, and ALPS, Kelty and Kijaro don't describe theirs as rigid either. Where a maker doesn't say, press down hard on the arm in a store or check the listing photos before you rely on it.

Leave capacity headroom

A rated capacity is the maker's single number, and none of these makers say how it was measured. LivingXL labels its 1,000 lb figure “stationary,” a useful reminder that a rating can describe someone sitting still, not someone dropping into the seat. Check the warranty where you'll buy

Where you buy can change what's covered. STRONGBACK gives 2 years on chairs sold on Amazon by Amazon or by STRONGBACK and nothing for third-party Amazon resellers. ALPS, Kelty and GCI require an authorized seller. Guide Gear's lifetime guarantee sits on Sportsman's Guide's own site and doesn't mention Amazon.
