How we picked

Every chair here has a side table its maker publishes as part of the chair — not a cup holder, not a cooler pouch, a surface you can put a plate on. Within that group the order follows our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs the maker's rated capacity, the frame and fabric, the written warranty and listed replacement parts before comfort and weight. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not sat in these chairs; every figure links to the page it came from.

The list is three long because that is how many we could verify. Side tables are common on director-style chairs and rare on everything else, and most of the chairs that advertise one come from brands with no published capacity, fabric or warranty, which means we cannot score them at all.

The three, side by side

What makes a good camp-chair table

• It folds with the chair. All three do. A clip-on tray that has to be packed separately gets left at home by the second trip.
• It has a recess for the drink. A flat tray spills; a moulded cup holder does not. All three publish a cup holder in the table.
• It sits at armrest height. Director-style chairs put the table level with the arm, which is the right height to eat from. A low sling chair with a table would put it at your knee.
• It is on the side you want. None of these three publishes a left-hand or right-hand option, and KingCamp states the ASH B30's table is not reversible. Check the photographs before you buy.

Why the Tall Director is first

Because the table is the easy part and the chair under it is the hard part. Guide Gear rates the Oversized Tall Director's Camp Chair to 500 lb, publishes 600-denier polyester, stands the seat 22 inches off the ground (the highest published seat in our registry) and 39 inches overall, and Sportsman's Guide sells it under a lifetime guarantee — the strongest term of the three by a wide margin. The table is integrated, with a cup holder, and the armrests are padded foam.

The costs are weight and parts. At 16.9 lb it is the heaviest chair here, and no replacement parts are listed, so the guarantee is the only repair route. The guarantee also lives on Sportsman's Guide's own site without saying whether a chair bought through a marketplace listing qualifies — the same caveat we flag on every Guide Gear product. The other two

KingCamp mesh director's chair (#2). The one to buy if the chair has to fit in a full car: a folding side table with a built-in cup holder, a mesh seat surface for hot days, double cotton padding on the seat, back and armrests, a 36-inch back and a 17.3-inch seat, at 11.9 lb and a 20 x 19 x 6-inch packed size. KingCamp rates it to 300 lb in 600D Oxford and covers it for 12 months. Note that KingCamp's page says 17.3 inches of seat height and its own Amazon listing says 18.5 inches; we use the maker's figure and flag the disagreement.

KingCamp ASH B30 (#3). The best table of the three and the most storage: the fold-out table carries a cup holder and a moulded phone or tablet slot, there is a multi-pocket organizer hanging off the side and a full-width mesh pocket under the seat. It is also the only chair here in 900D Oxford — the heaviest fabric published on any chair we score — on a flat-tube steel frame with rigid steel armrests wrapped in foam, which is the detail that makes standing up easier. It finishes third because KingCamp rates it to 300 lb, sets the seat at 16.1 inches and covers it for 12 months with no parts listed.

What didn't make the list

• Coleman Cooler Quad. Its armrest holds four cans, which is a cooler, not a table — you cannot put a plate on it. It is a good budget chair, and it leads our under-$50 picks on price rather than on features.
• Guide Gear Oversized Camp Chair. Hanging storage pouches and an armrest zip pocket, but no table.
• Coleman Pack-Away Cot. Not a chair, but worth knowing: it is the one piece of sleeping gear we score with a removable side table and a cup holder, in the cot rankings.
• Clip-on chair trays and cup-holder arms. Cheap and genuinely useful, and none of the ones we found publish a load rating or a warranty, so they cannot be scored here.
• Unbranded “director chair with side table” listings. No maker page, no published capacity, no warranty. The bulk of this category.

How to choose a camp chair with a side table

Decide whether you want a table or a work surface

A chair-mounted table holds a plate, a mug and a phone. It does not hold a stove, a griddle or a cooler, and no maker here publishes a figure that would let you try. If you are cooking, buy a table with a published load rating and put the chair next to it — start with tables with adjustable legs so the height matches your chair.

Check the seat height against the table height

Director-style chairs sit high (16 to 22 inches here) and put the table at arm level. That is what makes them work. A low lounger with a tray puts the surface at your knee, where a drink is easy to kick over.

Read the capacity before the features

Both KingCamp chairs are rated to 300 lb; the Guide Gear is rated to 500 lb. Side tables cluster on director chairs, and director frames are scissor-braced rather than quad-braced, so the ratings run lower than the heavy steel quads in our heavy-duty rankings.

Look for a denier figure

The KingCamp ASH B30 publishes 900D Oxford and the other two publish 600D. That is a real durability signal, and it is the one number cheap side-table chairs never state.

Rigid armrests, if you can get them

The ASH B30 is the only chair here with armrests its maker describes as rigid steel. On a chair with a table, the arms take load every time you lean over to pick something up, and a fabric sling arm gives way.

Expect the warranty to be the repair plan
