A chair is on this page only if its maker publishes a headrest, a head pillow or a headrest flap as part of the chair. A tall back is not a headrest, and neither is padding described as covering the neck and shoulders. Four kinds of headrest, and what each is for

• A separate pillow on the frame. The Guide Gear's 15 x 8-inch pillow and the Bliss chair's adjustable pillow. Most supportive, and the piece most likely to be lost or left behind.
• A padded headrest built into the backrest. Both KingCamp chairs. Nothing to lose, no adjustment.
• A sewn-in flap. The Helinox Beach Chair (re). The lightest approach by far, and the least padded.

Why the Helinox is first

On our rubric it is the highest-scoring chair here at 6.8, and the reason is repairability: Helinox lists a replacement seat, a replacement carry case and a replacement frame for this chair, which no other maker in this group matches on any product. Add a 320 lb rating at 3 lb 7.5 oz, bluesign-certified recycled 300D ripstop, flat splayed feet that Helinox says stop it sinking in sand, and a five-year warranty.

Two things to be clear about. It is sold as a beach chair, and it is low: Helinox's own table labels its height row both “Height” and “Seat Height” at 30.5 inches, which on a chair built to sit low in sand can only be the overall figure. And the headrest is a flap, not a pillow — support for your head rather than a cushion. If you want something plush behind your head, take the Guide Gear instead. The rest of the list

Guide Gear Oversized Zero-Gravity Chair (#2). The biggest headrest in the category and the only one with a published size, on the best-built zero-gravity chair we score: 500 lb rated, tubular steel, 600-denier polyester, 47 inches tall upright, lifetime guarantee. It weighs 23 lb, the heaviest chair in our registry, so it is a vehicle chair. Its listing quotes a “reclines back 68"” figure without saying what it measures.

KingCamp Orchid C20 (#3). A padded headrest and padded armrests on the most adjustable chair here: KingCamp publishes three positions — sit, semi-recline and flat recline — plus a detachable footrest and a 47.2-inch back, at 11.2 lb. Its capacity needs reading: KingCamp states 551 lb as a static load and 396 lb at the seat's front edge, and we score the lower one. Twelve-month warranty.

KingCamp Extra Wide High Back (#4). The lightest headrest chair we score at 3.3 lb, with a 600D Oxford seat, a mesh back, a 17.3-inch seat, a 36.2-inch back and a 330 lb rating. The pillow adjusts up and down the frame, which makes it the most versatile headrest here, and the canopy Bliss says blocks over 90% of UVA rays keeps the sun off your face when you are reclined. Rated 360 lb, one-year warranty, and Bliss publishes no product weight at all — which costs it points and is worth knowing before you carry it anywhere.

What didn't make the list

• Guide Gear Oversized Camp Chair. Guide Gear describes padding on the neck and shoulders, which is a padded back rather than a headrest. It is a superb chair otherwise and finishes high in our main rankings.
• Caravan Sports Oversized Infinity. It publishes an adjustable padded headrest that doubles as lumbar support, and it finishes last in every ranking it appears in because Caravan publishes no warranty term at all.
• Kijaro Dual Lock XXL and YETI Trailhead. Tall backs (38.98 and 36.3 inches) with no headrest published. A tall back supports your shoulders; it is not the same thing.
• Inflatable camp pillows strapped to a chair. They work, and they are not part of any chair we score, so there is nothing to rank.

How to choose a camp chair with a headrest

Work out whether you want your head or your neck supported

A pillow behind the head suits a reclined chair, where your head would otherwise tip back. A padded headrest built into a tall back suits an upright chair, where your neck wants something at shoulder height. Buying the reclined answer for an upright chair leaves the pillow pushing your chin onto your chest.

Check the back height first

A headrest is only in the right place if the back is tall enough. The chairs here publish 30.5 to 47.2 inches overall. Below about 36 inches, a headrest sits behind your shoulders rather than your head — which is fine if that is what you wanted.

Adjustable beats fixed, if it locks

Bliss and Caravan both publish pillows that slide on the frame. That is genuinely useful, and the thing to check is whether the pillow stays where you put it under load; neither maker publishes a mechanism.

A separate pillow is a thing you will lose

The Guide Gear's 15 x 8-inch pillow is the most comfortable headrest here and it is not sewn to the chair. If that matters to you, the two KingCamp chairs and the Helinox build theirs in.
