This page is about carried weight. Its sister page, best compact camping chairs, ranks the same class on packed size — how small a chair folds to fit in a full car or a small tent. They share picks and answer different questions: an 8 lb chair can fold very small, and a 20-ounce seat can be awkward to stow.

The weights, side by side

Weight first, because that is the decision. Capacity and warranty come next, because an ultralight chair that fails at the hub 40 miles in is not light, it is litter.

Is a chair worth carrying at all?

Honestly: for a fast overnight, no. For anything where you sit for two hours after dinner, a 1 to 2 lb chair changes the evening more than most of the gear you already carry. The useful way to frame it is against something you already accept: a litre of water is 2.2 lb. The Chair One is less than that. The Chair Zero is half of it.

The other honest note is that a frameless seat like the Crazy Creek is not the same product. You are still on the ground, just with a back. On cold or wet ground that is worse than a chair with legs, and on a rocky site it is better, because there is nothing to sink or wobble.

Why the Chair One is first

The Helinox Chair One is the highest-scoring chair in this whole weight class at 7.2, and the reason is repairability. Helinox is the only brand in our registry that sells a replacement seat for its chairs, along with replacement rubber feet and a replacement case. A packable chair lives or dies at two points, the seat fabric and the pole feet, and Helinox sells both. Add a 320 lb rating, 600D recycled polyester with mesh panels, a 25.5-inch overall height and a five-year warranty, and nothing else at this weight matches it.

The catch is price, and the fact that a DAC aluminum pole set is not something you improvise a fix for on the trail. Carry the chair in its case, not loose in a pack where a pole can take a sideways load.

Crazy Creek HEX 2.0 Original (#2). 20 ounces, a 4-inch rolled cylinder, 250 lb rated, and a Sit-for-Life limited lifetime warranty with a buckle repair kit and a mail-in repair program behind it. Carbon stays and a nylon hinge instead of a frame. It doubles as a sit pad, a sleeping-pad seat and a bleacher seat, and it is the only thing here that will still be usable in twenty years.

NEMO Moonlite Reclining (#3). The recline is real: a pulley system in the armrest straps lets you change the angle while sitting. 1 lb 15 oz, packs to 14.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches, under NEMO's lifetime warranty. NEMO does not publish a capacity on its own page, which is why its build score sits below the Chair One's; the 300 lb figure comes from an authorized dealer.

Helinox Chair Zero (#4). 1 lb 2 oz and a 14 x 4 x 4-inch cinch bag, the lightest chair with legs we score. The 100D aramid ripstop seat and 265 lb rating are the price of that. If you count grams, this is the chair; if you sit down hard, take the Chair One.

Big Agnes Skyline UL (#5). 1 lb 12 oz total, 1 lb 11 oz trail weight, 275 lb maximum load, and a self-equalizing center pole Big Agnes says levels the chair on uneven ground, which is the specific problem four-legged packable chairs have on a rooty site. Lifetime warranty from Big Agnes. Its 15-inch seat is the lowest here.

KingCamp Extra Wide High Back (#6). 3.3 lb, 600D Oxford seat, mesh back, padded headrest, a 17.3-inch seat, a 36.2-inch back and a 330 lb rating, at a fraction of the price of the ultralights. The warranty is one year and KingCamp lists no parts. It is the right answer for a first packable chair, and the wrong one if you are counting ounces.

What didn't make the list

• Helinox Chair One XL. 3 lb 5 oz and 35 inches tall: a superb chair, but the XL is a car-camping-weight chair in a packable shape. It leads our tall camper rankings instead.
• GCI Outdoor ComPack Rocker. 7.5 lb. It disassembles into a pouch, but that is a car-camping weight.
• Three-legged stools. Light and cheap, but with no back they do not solve the problem people carry a chair to solve.

How to choose a camp chair you have to carry

Set your ounce budget before you shop

Decide what a chair is worth to you in ounces, then buy the best chair inside that number. The useful brackets in this category are 20 ounces (frameless), around 1 lb 2 oz (the lightest chair with legs), around 2 lb (the mainstream ultralight chairs) and 3 lb plus (budget packables).

Rated capacity is not marketing on an ultralight chair

On a 13 lb steel quad chair the rating has enormous margin. On a sub-2 lb chair it is closer to the real limit. Helinox rates the Chair One to 320 lb and the Chair Zero to 265 lb, Big Agnes rates the Skyline UL to 275 lb, and NEMO publishes nothing. Look for feet, not just poles

Packable chairs sink on soft ground and scuff on rock. Helinox sells replacement rubber feet and a ball-feet upgrade; Big Agnes builds the levelling into the center pole. On a chair with neither, expect to put something flat under the feet on sand.

Buy the brand that sells a seat

Match the chair to the ground you sit on

Rocky and uneven: a self-levelling or frameless seat. Soft duff or sand: wide feet, or a frameless seat. Cold or wet ground: a chair with legs, every time, because a frameless seat puts you in contact with what you are trying to avoid.

If the chair rides in a car, buy a different chair
