How we picked

Every chair on this page publishes at least one number a tall camper can use: an overall (open) height, a seat height, or a stated fit range from the maker. Within that group we ranked on the fit numbers first and our Built-to-Last Score second, which weighs rated capacity, frame and fabric, the written warranty and listed replacement parts. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not sat in any of these chairs. Every figure on this page comes from the maker or dealer page it links to.

This is one of the fit roundups in our camping chair hub. It is a different question from how easy a chair is to stand up from, which is about seat height alone and which we rank separately for older campers. Tall campers need seat height plus back height plus width, and the three rarely arrive together.

The three numbers, side by side

Overall height first, because that is what decides whether your shoulders and head have anything behind them. A dash means the maker does not publish that figure, and a chair with no published overall height is a chair you are buying on faith.

Why back height is the tall camper's spec

A standard quad camp chair puts the top of its backrest somewhere between 33 and 36 inches off the ground. If you are 6 foot 2, your shoulders sit close to that line when your hips are 18 inches up, which is why so many tall campers describe the same two complaints: nothing behind the shoulders, and a head that tips back over the edge of the fabric.

Only some makers publish the number that predicts it. Guide Gear lists a 39-inch overall height for the Tall Director. Kijaro lists 38.98 inches for the Dual Lock XXL. STRONGBACK lists 36.5 inches, GCI lists 36.75 inches for its ComPack Rocker, YETI lists 36.3 inches for the Trailhead, and Helinox lists 35 inches for the Chair One XL. ALPS publishes a 22-inch backrest height for the King Kong but no overall height, so the only way to compare it with the others is through its seat height plus backrest.

Why the Tall Director is first

The Guide Gear Oversized Tall Director's Camp Chair is the only chair we score that leads on two of the three numbers that matter here: a 22-inch seat height and a 39-inch overall height. Guide Gear rates it to 500 lb, uses 600-denier polyester and sells it under Sportsman's Guide's lifetime guarantee. Its seat is 20 inches wide, narrower than the 24-inch seats on the King Kong, the Kijaro XXL and the Coleman Big & Tall, so if you are tall and broad, read the next three picks before you buy this one.

The catch is weight. At 16.9 lb it is the second-heaviest chair on this page, and Guide Gear's lifetime guarantee is published on Sportsman's Guide's own site without saying whether a chair bought on Amazon qualifies. No replacement parts are listed for it either, so the guarantee is the only repair route.

STRONGBACK Elite (#2). STRONGBACK is the only maker in our registry that publishes a height recommendation: it says the Elite suits people 5 feet 8 inches and taller. It backs that with a 36.5-inch overall height, a 23-inch seat width, 600D polyester, steel-framed armrests and a frame-integrated lumbar support, which is the feature a tall back actually wants. It is rated to 300 lb, the lowest capacity on this page, and its Amazon warranty is 2 years (sold by Amazon or by STRONGBACK) against 3 years direct, with fabric covered for one year.

ALPS Mountaineering King Kong (#3). The best-built chair here by our score at 7.6: an 800 lb rating, quilted 600D polyester, a 24-inch-wide seat 19 inches off the ground and a limited lifetime warranty. For a camper who is tall and heavy, nothing else on this page is close. ALPS publishes a 22-inch backrest but no overall height, and the chair weighs 13 lb and packs 40 inches long. Kijaro Dual Lock XXL (#4). 38.98 inches tall open, a 19.5-inch seat, a 24-inch seat width and a 400 lb rating, with a lock that holds the chair open and closed. It is the second-tallest chair on this page and the cheapest way to get a back that reaches a tall camper's shoulders. The warranty is one year, it excludes UV damage, and Kijaro publishes no fabric denier.

Helinox Chair One XL (#5). If your chair has to fit in a pack, this is the tall answer: 35 inches assembled, 320 lb rated, 600D recycled polyester, 3 lb 5 oz, and Helinox is the only brand in our registry that sells a replacement seat for its chairs. YETI Trailhead (#6). 36.3 inches tall, rated to 500 lb, a five-year warranty and UV-resistant FlexGrid mesh. The problem for a tall camper is underneath: YETI publishes no seat height, and CleverHiker measured 16.75 inches, which is low. Our YETI Trailhead review goes through the whole spec sheet.

Coleman Big & Tall Quad (#7). A 600 lb rating, a 24-inch seat width and a 19-inch seat height for far less money than anything above it. Coleman publishes no overall height, no fabric denier, covers camp seating for one year and sells no chair parts, which is what keeps it at the bottom of a durability ranking.

What didn't make the list

• Kijaro Dual Lock (standard). 37 inches tall with a 20-inch seat, the highest seat of any standard-size chair we score, but a 300 lb rating and a 22-inch seat width put it behind the XXL for a tall camper who also needs room.
• KingCamp Extra Wide High Back. 36.2 inches tall at 3.3 lb, but the seat is 17.3 inches and KingCamp's warranty is one year.
• GCI Outdoor ComPack Rocker. A 36.75-inch overall height and a 31.3-inch backrest, but a 16-inch seat and a 250 lb rating.
• LivingXL 1000-lb. Capacity Chair. A 20-inch seat, 26.5 inches wide and rated to 1,000 lb stationary, but DXL publishes no warranty for it, only a 90-day return policy.
• Helinox Chair Zero and Big Agnes Skyline UL. Both are 25 inches and 15 inches of seat height respectively: excellent chairs, wrong shape for a tall frame.

How to choose a camping chair when you're tall

Measure the chair you already hate

Before you read a single listing, measure the chair that is failing you: floor to the top of the backrest, floor to the seat, and the width of the seat between the arms. Now you have three numbers to beat instead of a feeling. Most tall campers discover the back is the problem, not the seat.

Read which height a listing means

An “open size” or “overall height” figure is ground to the top of the chair. A “backrest height” figure is seat to the top of the fabric. ALPS publishes the second kind and most other makers publish the first, so comparing them straight across will mislead you by roughly a seat height.

Seat depth matters as much as seat height

Long femurs need seat depth, and it is the least-published figure in the category. ALPS lists 20 inches of seat depth for the King Kong and Kijaro lists 18 inches for the XXL; most makers publish nothing. Where it is not published, a chair with a deep bucket seat (the Kijaro's no-sag seating, GCI's bucket seat) is the safer guess than a flat sling.

Leave capacity headroom, because tall usually means heavier

The tallest packable chair we score is the Helinox Chair One XL at 35 inches and 3 lb 5 oz. Everything lighter is shorter. That is the trade, and it is worth taking only if you actually walk in with your chair.
