What to buy first

One chair you'll keep, then shade. The chair is the piece that takes the wear: opened and closed several times a weekend, carried from the far lot, dropped in the trunk and left in full sun for hours. Buy one with a maker's rated capacity comfortably above your weight, a warranty measured in years, and a carry weight you can manage with a kid's bag in your other hand. The ALPS King Kong leads our best sideline chairs for sports parents: ALPS rates it to 800 lb, it uses 600D polyester and it carries a limited lifetime warranty, but it weighs 13 lb. If the walk is long, the Helinox Chair One is rated to 320 lb at under 2 lb, and Helinox sells its replacement seat. After the chair comes shade: the National Weather Service notes that full sun can raise the heat index by up to 15°F. A bleacher seat comes third, and only if your fields have stands.

How the category divides

Sideline chairs are the folding quad chairs and rockers parents set up along the touchline or the outfield fence. Canopy chairs build the shade in, with an attached canopy or umbrella. Tailgate chairs are the heavy-duty end of the same idea: chairs built for all-day use next to the car. Stadium and bleacher seats split again into flat seats that sit on the plank, like the 20 oz Crazy Creek HEX and Coleman's roll-up cushion, and hooked seats with a frame that grips the bench, like GCI's Big Comfort Stadium Chair, which GCI rates to 330 lb and says fastens to open-front bleachers. Check which kind of bleachers your complex has before you buy a hooked seat.

Rocking chairs cross over, since plenty of parents use one as their sideline chair. Most of GCI's spring-action rockers are rated to 250 lb; the Stowaway (300 lb) and the Freestyle Rocker XL (400 lb) are the exceptions. Our best rocking camping chairs ranks the whole lineup.

What actually decides durability

Four things, in this order. Rated capacity, the maker's published figure; if a maker won't publish one, we score it low and say so, as with Coleman's stadium seat. Fabric: few sideline makers publish a denier, and the ones that publish 600D earn a point in our build score. Warranty, and especially its sun clause. This matters more here than anywhere else on the site, because a sideline chair lives in the sun. GCI says sun damage and extended exposure to the elements void its 3-year chair warranty. Kijaro's 1-year term and ALPS's lifetime term both exclude UV damage. Parts, which are rare in this category: Crazy Creek sells a buckle repair kit and runs a mail-in repair program, Helinox sells replacement seats, and GCI lists a carry strap and says most other components are not available.

Those four are also what you should be paying for. When one chair costs more than another, check that the difference buys a higher rating, a heavier fabric, a longer warranty or a part you can replace, not a second cup holder and a new colorway.

The mistake buyers make

Buying the shade and ignoring the chair under it. Canopy chairs solve the sideline's biggest problem, and the best-known ones carry the weakest paperwork in the category: the Kelsyus Original has no maker spec sheet or published warranty, and the Sport-Brella Recliner carries 1 year. Often the better buy is a durable chair plus a clamp-on umbrella, so when the umbrella wears out you replace an accessory rather than the chair. The second mistake is storage. The chair that rides in the truck bed all summer is the chair whose warranty no longer applies. Use it in the sun, then bring it inside. The third is buying at the limit: a rocker rated to 250 lb, used every weekend by someone near 250 lb, is using most of its margin every time it rocks.
