What actually decides durability, and price

Four things decide how long a chair lasts, and they carry most of our score. First, the maker's rated capacity and the headroom it leaves you. Second, frame and fabric: powder-coated steel and 600D polyester are the published specs to look for. Third, the warranty, read past the headline. ALPS excludes UV damage and burns, STRONGBACK limits fabric coverage to one year, and YETI excludes punctures, so the fine print usually leaves the fabric to you. Fourth, replacement parts: Helinox sells seats, ALPS and STRONGBACK sell bags and small parts, and Coleman lists nothing for its chairs. Comfort and packed size make up the rest.

Price tracks those four less than you would think. The YETI Trailhead is premium-priced, yet YETI rates it to 500 lb against the King Kong's 800, warrants it for five years against ALPS's lifetime term, and lists no parts. The mistake buyers make

Buying on cup holders, color and a big capacity number without reading who stands behind it. Three examples from our research: Mac Sports says buying from resellers such as Amazon voids its warranty; Westfield Outdoors, which makes Timber Ridge chairs, says it can't process warranty claims for Amazon purchases; and STRONGBACK covers Amazon purchases for 2 years instead of the 3 it gives direct buyers, and excludes third-party Amazon resellers entirely. Most makers we score require a purchase from an authorized seller, so check who is selling before you buy and keep the receipt.
