How we picked

Every chair here is a true zero-gravity recliner: a sling suspended on bungee cords inside a tubular frame, with a lock that holds the recline. To be ranked, its maker had to publish a rated capacity and a frame material, and to have a page we could read. Within that group the order follows our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs rated capacity, frame and fabric, the written warranty and listed replacement parts. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not sat in any of these chairs; every figure links to the page it came from.

The list is three long, and that is the real state of the category. Zero-gravity chairs are sold mostly by patio and lawn brands, and the ones on the biggest shelves publish the least. A chair with no published capacity cannot be ranked here, no matter how many stars it has.

The three, side by side

What zero gravity actually means here

Nothing measurable. “Zero gravity” is a marketing description of a neutral-body recline position, in which your knees end up at or above your heart. Makers describe the sensation rather than a published angle. Guide Gear's listing says the chair “reclines back 68” without stating what that figure measures, and Bliss and Caravan describe locking at “any position” rather than quoting angles. So we score these chairs on the same terms as every other chair on this site and treat the recline as one fit feature, not as a category of its own.

What is real is the geometry: all three have low seats (Bliss and Caravan both publish 14.5 inches) and long frames that need clear ground behind them. That combination makes them wonderful beside a lake and poor at a camp table, and it is why they sit apart from our footrest chair rankings, where the chairs are designed to be sat in upright as well.

The bungee cords are the whole product

On a quad chair the fabric fails first. On a zero-gravity chair the bungee cords go first: they stretch, then the sling sags, and then the chair no longer holds a recline. That makes replacement cords the single most useful part anyone in this category can sell you.

Why the Guide Gear is first

It wins on the two heaviest-weighted lines in our rubric. Guide Gear rates it to 500 lb, which is 140 lb above the Bliss and 150 lb above the Caravan, and it is the only chair here with a published 600-denier fabric. Behind that sits Sportsman's Guide's lifetime guarantee on Guide Gear branded merchandise, the strongest term in the category by a wide margin. It stands 47 inches tall upright with a 21 x 21.5-inch seat and a headrest pillow.

Two caveats, both real. It weighs 23 lb, the heaviest chair in our whole registry, so it lives beside the vehicle. And the lifetime guarantee is published on Sportsman's Guide's own site without saying whether a chair bought through a marketplace listing qualifies, which is the same question we flag for every Guide Gear product on this site.

The other two

Bliss Hammocks 30-inch Wide XL (#2). A 360 lb rating, a 20.75-inch seat on a 30-inch-wide frame, a PVC-coated woven polyester sling on double bungees, an adjustable canopy Bliss says blocks over 90% of UVA rays, a pillow and a two-drink side tray. It folds to 6.25 x 38 x 27 inches. The warranty is one year of household use from an authorized seller, and Bliss publishes no product weight at all, which costs it portability points here because we will not estimate one. For a shaded seat by a lake it is the most complete chair on the page.

Caravan Sports Oversized Infinity (#3). 350 lb on tubular steel with an iron phosphate rust coating, a 600g Textilene sling, a 14.5-inch seat and dual fingertip locks that hold any angle. It is 25 lb and folds to 6 inches thick. What drops it to last is paperwork: Caravan publishes no warranty term anywhere on its site, only a claims form and a refund policy noting that manufacturer defects are covered and wear is not. In a ranking that weights the written warranty at 20%, a blank is a zero.

What didn't make the list

• KingCamp Orchid C20 with footrest. A mesh-back recliner with a footrest, rated 551 lb static but 396 lb at the seat's front edge, at 11.2 lb. It is the closest thing to a packable zero-gravity chair we score, but it is a reclining camp chair with a separate footrest rather than a bungee-sling lounger. It is ranked on our footrest chair page.
• ALPS Mountaineering Escape Chair. Also a footrest chair rather than a zero-gravity frame, and ALPS rates it to only 225 lb, but it is the one chair in this general class whose maker sells a replacement part (a kickstand elbow) and backs it for life.
• Caravan Infinity OG-Lounger. Caravan's listing title says 350 lb and its own specification list on the same page says 300 lb. We do not rank a product whose maker contradicts itself on the number that matters most.
• Every unbranded zero-gravity chair. No maker site, no published capacity, no warranty page. The category is full of them.

How to choose a zero-gravity chair for a campsite

Measure the ground behind it, not the chair

A zero-gravity chair fully reclined is roughly 6 feet long: Bliss publishes a 71.5-inch overall length. On a tight tent pad or between a car and a fire ring you will never reach the position you bought it for. Check the space before the specification.

Accept that this is a vehicle chair

Buy the canopy if you sit in the sun

Check the lock, then check it again loaded

All three chairs lock by squeezing or twisting the arm tubes. That mechanism is what slips first on a cheap chair, and there is no published test for it. In a shop, recline fully, lock, and put real weight through the frame before you trust it on a slope.

Assume you will buy cords, not a chair

Bungee cords stretch on every chair of this type, and on one of these three you can simply order new ones. Where you cannot, expect the chair's useful life to be the life of its cords.

Watch the seat height if standing up is hard
