The verdict
This is an unusually clean comparison, because Helinox changed almost nothing except the size. Both chairs are rated to 320 lb. Both use bluesign-certified recycled 600D polyester with mesh panels. Both are built on DAC aluminum alloy poles with nylon resin hubs and shock cord. Both carry Helinox's five-year warranty against manufacturing defects, and Helinox sells a replacement seat, replacement rubber feet and a replacement case for each. The entire decision is two numbers: how big the chair is, and how much it weighs.
Side-by-side specs
What is identical
The 320 lb rating is the surprise. Helinox gives the bigger chair the same figure as the smaller one, which means the XL is not a higher-capacity chair — it is a roomier chair with the same ceiling. If you are buying because you weigh more than a 265 lb or 300 lb chair allows, the XL does not help you past the Chair One; both stop at 320 lb. What it helps with is fit, which is a different problem.
The fabric is the same recycled 600D polyester with polyester mesh — the heaviest seat fabric Helinox uses on a packable chair, and the reason both score above the Chair Zero on build. The warranty is the same five years from purchase against manufacturing defects. And the parts list is the same shape: a model-specific replacement seat, replacement rubber feet and a replacement case, with broken poles handled through Helinox's service center. Repairability is where both chairs genuinely beat the rest of our registry, and it is identical between them.
Size: the whole argument
The Chair One stands 25.5 inches tall with a 20.5 x 20-inch assembled footprint. The XL stands 35 inches tall with a 27.5 x 23-inch footprint, and Helinox describes it as offering 40% more sitting room. Those 9.5 inches of extra height are the difference between a chair that supports your lower back and a chair that supports your shoulder blades too. On the Chair One, anyone over about 5 ft 10 in sits with the top rail below the shoulder line; on the XL it lands high enough to lean back against.
Neither chair publishes a seat height or a seat width, which is a real gap in Helinox's spec tables and the reason both chairs score only 4 of 10 on fit in our rubric despite being pleasant to sit in. The assembled footprint is the closest proxy you get: 7 inches wider and 3 inches deeper on the XL. At 35 inches the XL also falls just short of the 36-inch mark we treat as a genuine high back, so it is a mid-back chair, not a headrest chair — if you want your head supported, the headrest page has the chairs that publish one.
Frame and poles
Both frames are DAC aluminum alloy on nylon resin hubs with shock-corded poles, and Helinox specifies the Chair One's alloy as TH72M. The XL is described as green anodized DAC alloy with bigger-diameter poles, which is the structural change that lets a wider seat carry the same 320 lb. It is also the reason the XL packs 4.5 inches longer: the poles are thicker and the segments are longer.
In practice the hub is the part that fails on this style of chair, not the pole, and it is the same resin hub system on both. Helinox's FAQ says broken poles can be repaired at its service center rather than only replaced, which is a materially different proposition from the steel quad chairs where a bent leg ends the chair. We go through that in detail in our Chair One review.
Weight and packed size
The Chair One is 1 lb 15 oz assembled and 2 lb 2 oz packed with its case, in a 14 x 4.5 x 4.5-inch zippered bag. The XL is 3 lb 5 oz assembled and 3 lb 8 oz packed, in an 18.5 x 5 x 4.5-inch full-zip case. So the XL is roughly 70% heavier and 4.5 inches longer.
For a backpacker that settles it: 3 lb 5 oz is a tent-sized weight to spend on a chair, and the whole point of this product category is that it does not cost you a tent. For car camping the figures are irrelevant — both chairs fit in a glovebox-adjacent space compared with a 13 lb steel quad, and the XL still packs smaller than any folding chair with armrests. The rest of the sub-4 lb field is ranked in best camp chairs for backpacking.
Parts and repair
Identical in structure, different in part numbers. Helinox lists a Chair One replacement seat and a set of four replacement rubber feet; for the XL it lists a replacement seat and a pair of replacement rubber feet shared with the Sunset Chair. Both have a replacement case. Order the part for the chair you own: the seats are not interchangeable, because the whole difference between the chairs is the size of the seat.
Where the Chair Zero fits
If you came here because you want the lightest chair rather than the roomiest, the third model is the real answer: the Chair Zero is 1 lb 2 oz, packs to 14 x 4 x 4 inches, and is rated to 265 lb on a 100D aramid ripstop seat — a much lighter fabric. We compare it against the Chair One in detail in Helinox Chair One vs Chair Zero. In short: the Zero trades 55 lb of rating and most of the seat fabric for 13 oz.

Buy the Chair One if / buy the XL if
Buy the Chair One if
- The chair goes on or in a backpack, ever. 1 lb 15 oz and a 14-inch case is the whole reason to own one.
- You are under about 5 ft 10 in, where a 25.5-inch back still reaches your shoulder blades.
- You want the best weight-to-rating ratio in our registry: 320 lb at under 2 lb.
- Two chairs matter more than one big one — two Chair Ones weigh less than one Guide Gear quad.
Buy the Chair One XL if
- The chair travels by car, truck or boat and 1 lb 6 oz is not a currency you are counting.
- You are tall or broad. 40% more sitting room and a 27.5-inch assembled width is the point of the product.
- You sit in it for hours rather than minutes — 35 inches of back changes a long evening considerably.
- You want a packable chair that does not feel like camping equipment, which is largely a size question.
Buy neither if
- You need more than a 320 lb rating. Both stop there; our heavy-duty rankings start at 400 lb and run to 800.
- You want a published seat height, a cup holder or a side table. Helinox publishes no seat height for either chair and builds neither feature.
- Price is the constraint. Both chairs cost several times a steel quad with a higher rating; the value-per-dollar case is made on chairs under $50 instead.
How we scored this
What goes into every pick
We read the maker's rated capacity, frame, fabric, dimensions and weight; quote the warranty from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; check whether seat fabric, cot canvas, feet, valves and legs are sold as replacement parts; and score all of it on a published rubric where durability and warranty carry half the weight. Every spec links to where it came from, and the live Amazon price sits in the button.
Scores are computed from that documented research with fixed bands, so two products are always measured the same way. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the difference between the Helinox Chair One and the Chair One XL?
Size and weight, and almost nothing else. The XL stands 35 inches tall with a 27.5 x 23-inch footprint and what Helinox calls 40% more sitting room; the Chair One is 25.5 inches tall on a 20.5 x 20-inch footprint. Both are rated to 320 lb, both use recycled 600D polyester, both carry a five-year warranty and both have a replacement seat, feet and case. The XL weighs 3 lb 5 oz against 1 lb 15 oz.
Does the Chair One XL hold more weight than the Chair One?
No. Helinox rates both to 320 lb. The XL is a bigger seat at the same ceiling, not a higher-capacity chair. If you need a higher rating, you need a different chair entirely.
Is the Helinox Chair One XL good for backpacking?
Not really. At 3 lb 5 oz packed into an 18.5-inch case it is heavier and longer than most people will carry for a chair, and Helinox itself positions the XL as the comfortable one rather than the light one. The Chair One at 1 lb 15 oz, or the Chair Zero at 1 lb 2 oz, are the pack chairs.
Is the Chair One XL tall enough to support your head?
No. Its 35-inch overall height is a mid-to-high back — enough for your shoulders, short of your head. No Helinox chair in our registry publishes a headrest except the Beach Chair (re), which has a sewn-in flap rather than a pillow.
Can you use Chair One parts on the Chair One XL?
Not the seat, and not reliably the feet. Helinox lists a model-specific replacement seat for each chair, four rubber feet for the Chair One and a pair for the XL that it shares with the Sunset Chair. Order against the model name you own.
Which Helinox chair should a tall person buy?
The Chair One XL of these two, on its 35-inch back and 27.5-inch width. Across our whole registry, the chairs that publish the most height and seat width for tall campers are ranked in best camping chairs for tall people.
