How we picked
Every chair here packs to under 20 inches long by its maker's published figures, small enough for a trunk corner, and the four lightest weigh under 2 lb. We ordered them by our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs rated capacity, frame and fabric, the written warranty and whether the maker sells replacement parts before comfort and weight. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We haven't sat in any of these chairs: every spec on this page links to the maker or retailer page it came from.
Packable chairs are the lightweight end of our camping chair hub, and they play by different rules from a steel quad chair. They weigh ounces instead of pounds, they carry lower ratings, and the brand that sells you a new seat when the old one wears through matters as much here as anywhere in the category.
Packed sizes, side by side
Why the Chair One wins Best Packed Size without being the smallest
The award goes to the best-built chair among the ones that pack small, not to the smallest pack. By volume, the Big Agnes Skyline UL and the Helinox Chair Zero both pack smaller than the Chair One. Both give up something that matters more to a buy-once buyer. Big Agnes rates the Skyline UL to 275 lb and doesn't publish a fabric denier. Helinox rates the Chair Zero to 265 lb, with a 100D aramid ripstop seat.
The Chair One gives up very little for its 14 x 4.5 x 4.5-inch case. Helinox rates it to 320 lb, tied with the XL for the highest rating on this page, and seats you on 600D recycled polyester over a DAC TH72M aluminum frame. The 5-year warranty covers manufacturing defects. Most important for a chair you want to keep, Helinox sells a Chair One replacement seat, a set of four replacement rubber feet (for chairs made from 2015 onward) and a replacement case, and its FAQ describes repairing broken poles at its service center. That earns the Chair One a 9 for repairability, the highest on the page, shared with the other two Helinox chairs.
What it doesn't do: at 25.5 inches tall overall, it gives your head and upper back no support, and Helinox publishes no seat height or seat width. Its 5-year warranty is also shorter than the lifetime coverage NEMO and Big Agnes publish.
Buyer-first: the NEMO Moonlite scores 6.8 to the Chair One's 7.2 at the same 1 lb 15 oz, packs to a nearly identical 14.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches, adds a recline you adjust from the seat and carries NEMO's lifetime warranty. It trails on two lines: NEMO publishes no seat-fabric denier, where the Chair One's 600D earns a build point, and it lists no Moonlite parts, only repairs and spare parts on request. NEMO's page also doesn't publish a weight capacity; a retailer lists 300 lb. If recline and a lifetime term matter more to you than a replacement seat you can order, the Moonlite is a sound choice.
What wears out on a packable chair, and who fixes it
Helinox's own FAQ covers two repairs a hub-and-pole chair owner may need. For a broken leg pole, its warranty team may send a replacement pole or repair the chair at its service center. For a damaged seat, it points owners to a patch kit or a replacement seat. No other maker on this page lists a replacement seat for sale, which is why the three Helinox chairs lead on repairability. For patching a seat yourself, see our guide on how to fix a torn camping chair.
The warranties split three ways. NEMO and Big Agnes publish lifetime coverage against defects and repair damage outside it for a fee. Helinox gives 5 years and sells the parts. GCI gives 3 years on chairs and says sun damage and extended exposure to the elements void the warranty. Our camping chair warranty guide quotes every brand's terms side by side.
Capacity is the other trade. The ratings here run from 250 to 320 lb, well below the steel quad chairs in our overall camping chair rankings. If you're near 300 lb, read our guide to camping chair weight limits before you buy anything that packs into a 4-inch bag.
Choosing among the other five
Helinox Chair One XL (#2). Helinox says it gives 40% more sitting room than the Chair One, on bigger-diameter poles, with the same 600D seat and the same 320 lb rating. It weighs 3 lb 5 oz, packs to 18.5 x 5 x 4.5 inches and stands 35 inches tall, and Helinox sells its replacement seat too. It's the packable chair for a car camper who wants more room. Skip it if you backpack; the Chair One or Chair Zero packs smaller and lighter.
NEMO Moonlite (#3). Covered above: the recliner of the group, with a lifetime warranty (tied with Big Agnes for the longest here) and no maker-published rating.
Helinox Chair Zero (#4). At 1 lb 2 oz, the lightest chair we score, and Helinox calls it its smallest and most compact collapsible chair. The trade is a 265 lb rating and a 100D aramid ripstop seat instead of 600D polyester. Helinox sells its replacement seat. Our Helinox Chair One vs Chair Zero comparison goes line by line.
Big Agnes Skyline UL (#5). The slimmest pack here at 3.5 x 3.5 x 17 inches and 1 lb 12 oz, with a self-equalizing center pole that Big Agnes says levels the chair on uneven ground. Big Agnes warrants it for the lifetime of the product and repairs damage outside the warranty at its discretion, but lists no parts for it. It carries a 275 lb rating and a 15-inch seat.
GCI Outdoor ComPack Rocker (#6). The only chair here that rocks. GCI's torsion-rocking bucket seat breaks down into a 6 x 5.5 x 19.5-inch pouch, with a padded seat and a 36.75-inch overall height, the tallest on this page. It weighs 7.5 lb, more than twice any other chair here, has no armrests and a 16-inch seat, and GCI rates it to 250 lb. For full-size rockers, see our rocking camping chair picks.
The catch: packable chairs sit low
Folding small means short legs. Big Agnes publishes a 15-inch seat height and GCI a 16-inch one. Helinox and NEMO don't publish seat heights at all, and the Chair One and Chair Zero stand only 25.5 and 25 inches tall overall. If getting up from a low seat is hard for you, a packable chair is the wrong tool. Our high-seat camping chair picks start at 18 inches.

How to choose a compact camping chair
Decide where it travels
If it rides in a backpack, weight and length decide it: the Chair Zero, Big Agnes Skyline UL, Chair One and NEMO Moonlite all weigh under 2 lb and pack to 17 inches or less. If it rides in the car and you just want it out of the way, the Chair One XL buys you a bigger seat for an extra 1 lb 6 oz over the Chair One, and the ComPack Rocker buys you a rocking seat.
Trust the maker's rating over a retailer's
Five of the six chairs here carry a maker-published weight capacity. NEMO doesn't publish one on the Moonlite's page, so we score the 300 lb figure a retailer lists and label it that way. When a listing quotes a capacity the maker doesn't, treat it as a claim, not a spec.
Look for a replacement seat
Seat fabric is the part you're most likely to wear out. Helinox sells replacement seats for the Chair One, Chair Zero and Chair One XL. NEMO and Big Agnes offer repairs and, for NEMO, spare parts on request. GCI sells only a carry strap for its chair line. If you plan to keep a packable chair for a decade, that difference matters more than an ounce.
Read the fabric line
The Chair One and Chair One XL publish 600D recycled polyester, the heaviest fabric band we score. The Chair Zero uses 100D aramid ripstop. NEMO, Big Agnes and GCI publish their seat materials (mesh, high-tenacity nylon ripstop, mesh panels) without a denier, so we can't compare them on weight.
Pair it with a small table
A low seat and a standard-height camp table don't always pair well, so check both heights before you buy. Helinox also makes a packable table; our Helinox Table One review covers its specs and warranty.
How we scored this
Products we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they sat in every chair on the list for a season. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: read the maker's rated capacity, frame, fabric, dimensions and weight; quote the warranty from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; check whether seat fabric, cot canvas, feet, valves and legs are sold as replacement parts; and score all of it on a published rubric where durability and warranty carry half the weight. Every spec links to where it came from.
Scores are computed from that documented research with fixed bands, not lab results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the most compact camping chair?
By packed volume, the Big Agnes Skyline UL: 3.5 x 3.5 x 17 inches, about 208 cubic inches. By length, the Helinox Chair Zero and Chair One tie at 14 inches, and Helinox calls the Chair Zero its smallest collapsible chair.
What is the lightest camping chair?
The Helinox Chair Zero, at 1 lb 2 oz on Helinox's spec table, is the lightest chair we score. It's rated to 265 lb.
How much weight can a compact camping chair hold?
The chairs on this page are rated from 250 lb (GCI ComPack Rocker) to 320 lb (Helinox Chair One and Chair One XL). That's well below heavy-duty steel chairs, several of which their makers rate to 500 lb or more.
Can you replace the seat on a Helinox chair?
Yes. Helinox sells replacement seats for the Chair One, Chair Zero and Chair One XL, plus rubber feet and cases, and its FAQ says broken poles can be replaced or repaired through its warranty team and service center.
Should I buy the Helinox Chair One or the Chair Zero?
The Chair One if you can spare 13 ounces: Helinox rates it to 320 lb with a 600D seat, against 265 lb and 100D aramid ripstop for the Chair Zero. The Chair Zero if every ounce in your pack counts.
Are compact camping chairs hard to get out of?
They can be. Big Agnes publishes a 15-inch seat for the Skyline UL and GCI a 16-inch seat for the ComPack Rocker, and Helinox and NEMO publish none. If you need a seat that's easy to rise from, look for 18 inches or more.
What is the NEMO Moonlite's weight limit?
NEMO's product page doesn't publish one. Retailer Christy Sports lists 300 lb, and that's the figure we score, labeled as a retailer number.
