Helinox Chair One vs NEMO Moonlite: the same weight, two different bets

Two packable camp chairs at 1 lb 15 oz apiece, in cases within half an inch of each other. One sells you a replacement seat; the other reclines and carries a lifetime warranty. That is the whole decision.

The verdict

On our Built-to-Last Score the Helinox finishes ahead, and the reason is narrow and specific: repairability is 15% of the chair rubric and Helinox is the only brand in the packable lane that sells the part that actually wears out. If you weight comfort over a decade of ownership, the Moonlite is a defensible buy. The bands are on our methodology page.

The specs, side by side

Chair One against Moonlite on every row either maker publishes.

Weight and packed size: a tie

There is no meaningful difference. Helinox publishes 893 grams for the chair and 965 grams packed; NEMO publishes 872 grams as a minimum weight, and a retailer lists 1 lb 14 oz. Twenty-one grams is a mouthful of water. The cases differ by half an inch in length and are identical in cross-section, so both slide into the same side pocket on the same pack.

If you genuinely want lighter, neither is the answer — the Helinox Chair Zero is the lighter sibling, and we put the pair head to head in Chair One vs Chair Zero. The whole class is ranked in best camp chairs for backpacking.

Capacity: only one of them publishes it

Helinox states 320 lb for the Chair One. NEMO does not publish a capacity for the Moonlite anywhere we could read; the 300 lb figure on our card comes from Christy Sports, a named dealer, and we label it that way rather than pretending it is a maker figure.

That gap is not academic. A capacity is the single most useful durability number a chair maker publishes, because it tells you what the frame was designed around, and a packable chair with hub joints and shock-corded poles has more places to exceed it than a steel quad does. If you are near 300 lb and buying a chair to last, buy the one whose maker will put a number in writing. Our weight limits guide explains how much headroom to leave.

Repairability: Helinox, clearly

A packable chair fails in two places: the fabric seat where the hub ends poke into it, and the rubber feet, which are small, soft and the first thing to go missing. Helinox sells both. Its replacement parts listing covers a replacement seat, rubber feet in a set of four and a replacement case for the Chair One. Nobody else in this lane does that.

NEMO's position is that it offers a repair service and will supply spare parts by request — which is a real service, and it is not the same thing as a part you can order at 9 p.m. the night before a trip. We score a listed part above a request form, every time, and that single row is the margin between these two chairs on our rubric.

Warranty: NEMO, clearly

NEMO backs the Moonlite with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Helinox backs the Chair One with five years. Both are limited to manufacturing defects, which is the normal shape of these terms and worth reading carefully: a seat that wears through after four seasons of sun is not a manufacturing defect under either policy.

So the two warranties are answering slightly different questions than you might think. NEMO's lifetime term covers a hub that was made wrong in 2031. Helinox's parts listing covers a seat that wore out the normal way in 2031. Only one of those is the thing that actually happens to camp chairs — see how long camping chairs last. Every brand's exact wording is quoted in our warranty guide.

The recline, and whether it earns its place

The Moonlite's differentiator is genuine: NEMO runs a pulley system through the armrest straps so you can adjust how far back the seat sits, and it uses ball-and-socket connectors where the seat meets the frame. On a chair under two pounds that is a real piece of engineering, and it is the reason the Moonlite is the compact chair we recommend to anyone who finds a fixed packable seat too upright after an hour.

The Chair One's answer is simply to be a well-sorted fixed chair: Helinox publishes a 25.5-inch overall height on a 20.5 x 20-inch footprint, with mesh panels in the 600D polyester for airflow. If you want a packable chair that holds you up and that you can keep running for a decade, that is the better bet. If you want to settle back, the Moonlite is.

Worth noting what neither does: neither publishes a seat height. Big Agnes publishes 15 inches for the Skyline UL and that is the only packable seat height in our registry, which tells you how low this whole class sits. If standing up is the problem, these are the wrong chairs — read best high-seat camping chairs instead.

Which one to buy

Buy the Helinox Chair One if

  • You want a published rated capacity — 320 lb, in writing, from the maker.
  • You intend to own the chair for a decade and replace the seat and feet when they go.
  • You want the heavier published fabric: bluesign-certified recycled 600D polyester against an unquantified mesh.
  • You already own Helinox gear and want parts that come from one catalog.

Buy the NEMO Moonlite if

  • An adjustable recline is worth more to you than a replaceable seat.
  • You want the longest written term in the packable lane: lifetime against manufacturing defects.
  • You are comfortably under 300 lb, so the missing published capacity is not your problem.
  • You would rather send a chair back for repair than order a part and do it yourself.

Buy neither if

You are over 320 lb, you want a seat higher than about 15 inches off the ground, or the chair never leaves the car. For the first two, the heavy-duty and high-seat lanes are the right place. For the third, a quad chair gives you four times the chair for a third of the money — see the main rankings.

The one spec to measure before you order either

The packed length against your pack's side pocket: 14 inches (Helinox) or 14.5 inches (NEMO). Both are 4.5 inches square in section. Half an inch decides whether the chair rides in a pocket or inside the pack, and that is the only dimension where these two differ at all.

And one thing both get right

Both use recycled fabric and both publish their frame alloys by name — DAC TH72M for Helinox, forged 6061 hubs and 7001 tubes for NEMO. A maker that names the alloy is a maker that knows what it bought, and in a category full of “aircraft-grade aluminum” that counts for something.

How we scored this

What goes into every pick

We read the maker's rated capacity, frame, fabric, dimensions and weight; quote the warranty from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; check whether seat fabric, cot canvas, feet, valves and legs are sold as replacement parts; and score all of it on a published rubric where durability and warranty carry half the weight. Every spec links to where it came from, and the live Amazon price sits in the button.

Scores are computed from that documented research with fixed bands, so two products are always measured the same way. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its bands are published.
