How we picked

Every table here has storage its maker publishes: enclosed shelves, zippered compartments, a lower rack, a shelf or pockets. We ranked on the storage first — how much, how enclosed, how useful — and then on our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs the published load rating, the tabletop material, the written warranty and listed parts. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not used these tables; every figure links to its source.

This page overlaps with our camp kitchen table rankings on products, and differs on the question. That page ranks the same class on load rating and heat: what the top will hold and whether a stove or griddle can sit on it. This page ranks them on storage, which reorders the list, because the table with the best top has the least enclosed storage and the table with six shelves has a modest top.

Four kinds of camp-table storage

They are not interchangeable, and knowing which one you want does most of the choosing.

• Enclosed shelves. Zip-up fabric pantry sections, as on the Kamp-Rite. Keeps dust, wind and wasps off food, and holds the shape of what is inside. The most useful kind, and the bulkiest.
• Zippered compartments under the top. The Camp Chef Sherpa's approach: the storage is the table's body, so it packs as one unit. Best storage-to-weight ratio here.
• Open lower racks. On both GCI cook stations and rated (35 lb). Ideal for a cooler, a water jug or a crate; useless for anything that must stay clean or dry.
• Shelves, hooks and pockets. The Coleman's mesh shelf, utensil hooks and lantern holder. Cheap, genuinely handy, and nothing you would leave food in overnight.

Why a 5.0 is ranked first

The Kamp-Rite Kwik Pantry scores 5.0 on our rubric, the second-lowest score on this page, and it still leads. Our rubric rewards the load rating and the warranty, which is right for a table you put a stove on. This page is about storage, and on that axis nothing else here is close: two zippered pantry sections with three shelves each is six enclosed shelves, plus two outside utensil pockets, plus a roll-out aluminum top Kamp-Rite rates to 70 lb with a detachable windshield for a camp stove, at a 33-inch working height.

What that costs you is the same thing it costs on every table in this class: a one-year warranty, no listed parts, and 22 lb in a 38 x 23 x 5-inch package. Kamp-Rite's own page also lists 22 lb in the specifications and 24 lb in the shipping field, which is the sort of small inconsistency we note rather than resolve.

The rest of the list

Camp Chef Sherpa Table & Organizer (#2). The clever one. The storage is the table: four zippered compartments with removable organizers sit under an aluminum roll-top at a 29-inch working height, and one organizer is lined so it can be used as a sink or a cooler. A divider holds a Mountain Series stove for transport. 13 lb, folds to 18.5 x 27.5 x 17 inches, 66 lb top rating from Camp Chef's instructions, one-year warranty. If your kit has to fit in a car with four people in it, this is the pick.

GCI Outdoor Slim-Fold Cook Station (#3). The best table of the five, with the third-best storage: a 35 lb lower rack, four 30 lb side tables with beverage holders and integrated utility hooks, on a heat-resistant aluminum top GCI rates to 48 lb and describes as suitable for camp stoves, griddles and hot cookware. It folds to 3.7 inches thick and carries GCI's three-year warranty. Our full Slim-Fold review goes through that 48 lb limit, which is the figure to check before you put a cast-iron griddle on it.

GCI Outdoor Master Cook Station (#4). The Slim-Fold's bigger sibling: a powder-coated steel storage shelf, a 35 lb lower rack, three side tables, cup holders, utensil hooks, a collapsible soft-shell sink with a drain and a height-adjustable lantern pole, at a 32.3-inch working height. It is the wash-up station of the group, and at 22.4 lb the heaviest GCI option.

Coleman Pack-Away Folding Camp Kitchen (#5). The budget answer, and the one most people actually own: a mesh shelf, utensil hooks, a lantern holder, a side table sized for Coleman stoves and coolers, and a prep surface that folds down into its own storage case. 14.33 lb at a 33.75-inch prep height. Coleman publishes no load rating for it and the top is fiberboard, which is why it finishes last in a durability ranking.

What didn't make the list

• ALPS Mountaineering Overlanding Table. The best-built roll-top table we score, with legs and a top sold as parts and a lifetime defect warranty, but no storage at all. It leads our main table rankings instead.
• Lifetime 4-Foot Adjustable Height Table. A 1,500 lb load rating and a 10-year warranty, and nothing underneath it but air.
• Chuck boxes. The original camp storage answer, and often better than any of these: a box holds more, protects more and can be built to fit your car. Our chuck box guide covers when a folding kitchen replaces one and when it does not.

How to choose a camp table with storage

Decide what goes in it before you choose it

Dry food and utensils want enclosed shelves. A cooler and a water jug want an open rack rated to hold them (GCI publishes 35 lb). Plates and a stove want a top with a published load rating. Write your list first and the ranking above reorders itself for you.

Check the working height against your back

These run from 28 inches (GCI Slim-Fold) to 33.75 inches (Coleman Pack-Away Kitchen). Kitchen counters are around 36 inches, so all of them are lower than what you are used to chopping on. Our camp table height guide has the numbers for eating, prep and cooking.

Read the load rating before you put a griddle on it

GCI rates both cook-station tops to 48 lb, Kamp-Rite rates its top to 70 lb, Camp Chef's instructions say 66 lb, and Coleman publishes nothing. A 22-inch cast-iron griddle plus fuel can pass 48 lb on its own, which is exactly the check our griddle table page is built around.

Packed thickness is the spec you will care about later

The Slim-Fold folds to 3.7 inches and the Coleman to 5 inches; the Kwik Pantry is 5 inches thick but 38 inches long. Measure the gap behind your rear seats before you buy the one with the most shelves.

Expect no parts, and plan around it

None of the five lists replacement parts. GCI offers a limited selection by request; Camp Chef, Kamp-Rite and Coleman list nothing. The two ways to make that acceptable are choosing the longest warranty (GCI's three years) or treating fabric storage as the consumable it is and keeping it out of the sun.

One table or a table plus a box
