How we picked

We looked for mattresses their makers sell for sleeping in a vehicle, with published dimensions, and a written warranty, and we checked that each one is listed on Amazon. Four qualified: one self-inflating foam mat and three air mattresses. They're scored with the same mattress rubric as everything in our camping mattress hub: the shell fabric (plus a point for a foam core), the warranty, the parts the maker sells, fit and comfort from published size, thickness and R-value, then weight. The four, side by side

Foam or air in a vehicle

The biggest split on this page is construction, and it decides more than comfort. The MegaMat Auto is a self-inflating mat: open-cell foam inside an airtight shell. The three others are air mattresses with no foam at all. Two consequences follow.

Warmth. Exped publishes an ASTM R-value of 8.1 for the MegaMat Auto. None of the three air mattresses publishes an R-value; Luno rates both of its mattresses “3-season” and gives no number, and Napier gives nothing. A truck bed or cargo floor cools down overnight like the ground does, so on a cool night the insulation under you matters as much as the thickness. Sea to Summit's buying guide puts winter use at R 4 or more. If you camp into the shoulder seasons, that alone points to the foam mat, or to adding a closed-cell pad under an air mattress (R-values add, per Sea to Summit).

Failure. A leak in the MegaMat Auto still leaves 10 cm of foam under you. A leak in an air mattress leaves the truck bed. Luno puts a repair patch in the box but lists no replacement parts; Napier is the only air maker here that sells parts for its mattress (a replacement valve, plug and cap). The air mattresses answer back on two points. They're thick when inflated for their packed size, and the Luno AIR BASE splits in two with a zipper, so a solo sleeper can leave half at home. They also carry a published weight rating (300 lb per side on the Lunos, 400 lb on the Napier), which Exped doesn't publish for the MegaMat Auto.

What to measure first

Every maker here publishes a size, and none of them can promise it fits your vehicle. Before you buy, measure three things with the seats folded or the tailgate down:

• Floor length. The MegaMat Auto is 76.0 inches long and the Luno AIR BASE 74 inches. Luno sizes its truck mattress by bed length and says the 5.5 ft version sleeps two people up to 7 ft 3 in with the tailgate down.
• Width at the widest and narrowest points. The MegaMat Auto is 52.0 inches wide narrowing to 39.0 at the foot, with cut-outs on the sides; the AIR BASE is 50.75 inches at the head, narrower at the foot. The Napier Full Size is 75 x 50 inches and is sold to fit between a pickup's wheel wells.
• Head height. A 5-inch air mattress on a cargo floor eats headroom. Thickness here runs from 3.5 inches (AIR BASE) to 5 inches (Napier).

Why the ranking looks like this

The Exped MegaMat Auto scores 7.5, more than two points clear of the rest, and the gap comes from the build. Its 75D polyester base, foam core, ASTM R-value, tricot top and 5-year warranty all score higher than anything the air mattresses publish. It isn't perfect: 7.9 lb, no replacement valve listed, and a 76-inch length that some cargo floors won't take. Exped sells it for one or two people, with a flat valve on each side and a valve pin for setting firmness.

The two Lunos are nearly tied (5.3 and 5.2). Both use Oxford polyester, both carry a 3-year warranty and a 300 lb per side rating, and both come with a 12V pump. The AIR BASE is the SUV version, 3.5 inches thick, and splits so one person can pack half. The AIR Truck Bed Mattress is 4 inches thick and comes in four bed sizes. Luno also sells an optional paid lifetime warranty add-on, but only on its own site, so it doesn't count for an Amazon purchase.

The Napier Sportz Air Mattress ranks last on a 30-day warranty, the shortest published term of any product we score, and PVC whose thickness Napier doesn't publish. It does two things well: a built-in hand pump, so you don't need a power outlet, and a replacement valve, plug and cap you can actually buy. If you want a cheap between-the-wheel-wells mattress and accept the warranty, it's the honest budget pick.

How to choose a vehicle mattress

Pick foam for cold, air for packed size

If you camp when nights drop toward freezing, a self-inflating mat with a published R-value is the durable choice. If you camp in summer and want the thickest bed for the smallest bag, an air mattress will do, but add a closed-cell pad under it on cool nights. Read the warranty before the thickness

Warranties on this page run from 30 days (Napier) to 3 years (Luno) to 5 years (Exped). A vehicle mattress gets dragged over tailgates and hinges; the written promise is worth more than an extra inch of air.

Check the power situation

The Lunos inflate with a 12V pump, the Napier with a built-in hand pump, and the MegaMat Auto mostly inflates itself and comes with Exped's Mini Pump to top up. If your vehicle's 12V outlet only works with the ignition on, plan for that.

Who should skip these
