Cot vs air mattress: one can't go flat, and neither keeps you warm alone

The verdict

Our scores reflect that. The TETON scores 8.5 of 10 on our cot rubric, the top cot we score. The Coleman Airbed Cot scores 5.2 on the same rubric, pulled down by its warranty and its missing parts. The SoundAsleep scores 3.9 on our mattress rubric, the lowest of the 17 mattresses and pads we score. The two rubrics weight things differently, so read each score against its own category, not against each other. The specs, side by side

Durability: one of these can't go flat

A cot's failure modes are slow and visible. The bed fabric wears or tears, a leg bends, a rail cracks. On the TETON, the bed is IronStretch 600D Oxford canvas on steel X-legs, and TETON rates the whole cot to 600 lb, tied for the highest single-cot rating we found. When something does fail, TETON lists the canvas cot top, end bars, side rails, middle and outer legs and feet as spare parts, ordered by email to its Customer Experience team, and it publishes a video on replacing the cot top. A cot like that can be repaired part by part for as long as the maker keeps selling parts.

An air mattress fails all at once. One puncture, one weak seam or one leaking valve and you're on the ground. SoundAsleep doesn't publish the thickness of the PVC in its Camping Series Queen, so there's no durability figure to compare. It does ship a patch kit and publishes a leak-finding and repair guide, and that guide is candid about its limits: “The patch kit does not work particularly well on the top of the mattress because the material is flocked for comfort. It also doesn't work great on the seams.” If you go the air-mattress route, keep the kit in the car and read how to find and fix a camping mattress leak before the trip, not at midnight.

The Coleman Airbed Cot sits in between. Coleman says it “Supports up to 600 lbs” and that its AirTight system “is factory-tested to be leak-free,” with a Double Lock valve. It still has an air mattress as its sleeping surface, so a puncture still ends the night, and Coleman publishes no fabric denier for the cot.

Warranty and parts

Read the SoundAsleep exclusion twice, because it covers the way air mattresses usually fail. A manufacturing defect in year one is covered; a thorn, a sharp rock or a dog's claw is not. A cot's version of that damage, a torn bed, is still a problem on the TETON, but it's a problem with a part number. Coleman sells no parts for any of its cots: its replacement-parts page covers tents, grills and stoves, coolers and lighting only. Warmth: neither is warm on its own

Getting off the ground isn't the same as getting warm, on either side of the cot vs air mattress question. Sea to Summit, which makes air mats, puts the problem plainly: “Even in summer, the ground is colder than your body.” In an air-filled mat, it explains, warmth escapes when “the warm air from the top side of the mat” swaps places with the cold side, which is convection, and “a mat with small chambers allows less air movement than one with larger chambers.” It adds that “an insulating medium such as Primaloft® or Thermolite® slows air movement within the mat.” SoundAsleep publishes no R-value and no insulation for the Camping Series Queen, so there's no number to plan with.

A cot has the mirror-image problem. TETON, which makes the cot we rank first, says so in its own pad guide: “A cot lifts you off the ground, which helps, but air still moves freely underneath you all night, and that airflow can pull warmth away just as effectively as direct ground contact.” None of the three products here publishes an R-value, and the Coleman Airbed Cot combines both problems: moving air under the frame and an uninsulated air bed on top of it.

The fix is the same for all three: put insulation with a published R-value under your body. R-value measures how much a pad resists heat flowing from you to the cold surface beneath, and NEMO notes that “R-Value is additive,” so two layers add up. On a cot, that means a pad on the bed; TETON sizes its Canvas Camp Pad to its cots, with R 5.5 on the Universal XL size and R 6.2 on the Outfitter XXL size (the XXL size was sold out on 2026-09-22). On an air mattress, Sea to Summit recommends adding a closed-cell foam pad for winter use. Height, length and getting up

Height is the cot's other big advantage, and it matters more every year you camp. The TETON Outfitter XXL stands 19.5 inches high set up, so you sit down onto it and stand up from it instead of climbing up off the floor. The SoundAsleep is 9 inches thick and lies on the tent floor, so getting up means getting up from 9 inches. The Coleman Airbed Cot goes highest of the three, with a 22-inch bed height, plus two side tables with cup holders. Check length too. TETON lists an 80-inch sleeping surface on the XXL. The SoundAsleep is 78 inches long, and so is the Coleman, which Coleman says is designed for people up to 6 ft. On a cot, the bed is also a fixed shape: a taut canvas sling between two rails. On an air mattress, firmness depends on how hard you pump it and how much air it holds through the night.

Sleeping two: where the air mattress wins

A queen air mattress is one 78 x 58-inch surface. The TETON is 35.5 inches wide, which is generous for one sleeper and useless for two, so a couple on cots means two cots, two footprints and two 26 lb carries. If sharing a bed matters more than anything else on this page, the air mattress (or the Coleman hybrid) is the honest answer.

The Coleman Airbed Cot - Queen is the one product here that gives two people a raised, shared bed: 78 x 59 inches, 22 inches up, “Supports up to 600 lbs.” Coleman doesn't split that rating per side, so treat it as the total for both of you. Weight, packing and setup

The TETON weighs 26 lb and packs into a tote 45 x 7.5 x 13 inches, so it rides in a trunk or truck bed, not a backpack. It sets up without a pump; TETON's patented pivot arm is a built-in lever that swings the last, tightest end bar into place. Set up, it takes 86 x 45 inches of floor, so measure the tent. The Coleman Airbed Cot is the heaviest thing here at 42.6 lb, packed to 39.4 x 11.3 x 9.9 inches, and its 4D pump needs batteries you buy separately.

SoundAsleep publishes no weight for the Camping Series Queen. It includes a rechargeable external pump and a storage bag, which means no outlet is needed at camp but the pump needs a charge before you leave. On the floor, a queen air mattress needs 78 x 58 inches of flat tent floor, more than a single cot but less than two.

The middle ground: a self-inflating mattress

If neither option fits, there's a third: a thick self-inflating mattress on the ground. Open-cell foam inside the shell means a slow leak leaves you on foam rather than on the floor, and these mattresses publish R-values. The Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D, for example, is 4.25 inches of self-inflating foam with an R-value of 7 and a limited lifetime warranty. • Getting up from the floor is hard; the TETON stands 19.5 inches high.
• You camp where thorns and sharp rocks are common and don't want a puncture to end the night.
• You sleep alone, and 26 lb in the trunk is fine.

Buy the air mattress (SoundAsleep Camping Series Queen) if

• Two of you want one shared 78 x 58-inch surface.
• You camp a few warm weekends a year and accept a 1-year warranty that excludes punctures.
• You'll carry the patch kit and a pad for anything but a warm night.

Buy the hybrid (Coleman Airbed Cot - Queen) if

• You want a raised bed for two: 78 x 59 inches, 22 inches up, rated to 600 lb total by Coleman.
• You drive to the site and 42.6 lb doesn't matter.
• You accept Coleman's 1-year warranty and the fact that it sells no parts for it.

Whichever you buy
