How we picked

Every mattress here arrives with a pump: attached to the mattress, or in the box. We ranked them on whether that pump works where people actually camp, and used our Built-to-Last Score — face fabric and core, the written warranty, repairability, then fit and weight — for everything after that. The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not slept on these; every figure links to its source.

That ordering means the highest-scoring mattress on the page finishes fourth. We explain exactly why below, because a page that ranks a mains-powered pump first for camping would be useless.

Four kinds of pump, and only three work at a campsite

• Rechargeable, built into or supplied with the mattress. SoundAsleep's Camping Series and the Etekcity. Charge at home or in the car, inflate anywhere. The right answer for camping.
• Hand or foot pump built into the mattress. The Napier Sportz. Slower, and it cannot run out of charge — the only kind that is guaranteed to work on night four.
• Battery pump. Coleman's Airbed Cot Queen uses a 4D pump with batteries sold separately. Works off-grid as long as you brought the batteries.
• Mains (AC) pump, truly built in. The SoundAsleep Dream Series. One button, no separate parts, and it needs a wall socket. Fine at a powered RV site or in a spare room; no use at a tent pitch.

The four, side by side

Why the highest score is ranked last

Our rubric rewards thickness, width and a flocked top, and the SoundAsleep Dream Series wins all three: 19 inches of airbed on 40 internal coils, 80 x 60 inches, with a patch kit and a published leak-repair guide behind it. It scores 4.2 to the Camping Series' 3.9 — and it is the wrong buy for camping, because its 1-click pump runs on mains power. SoundAsleep's own page calls it a raised indoor air mattress, while its marketplace listing is sold for “home and camping.” Both of those things are true; only one of them is useful at a tent pitch.

So we ranked on the pump. The Camping Series is SoundAsleep's outdoor model, 9 inches tall instead of 19, with a rechargeable pump the maker says charges at home or in the car and inflates in under three minutes. That is the same company's answer to the same problem, built for the place you are going.

The rest of the list

Etekcity EAM-EQ1 (#2). The rechargeable pump comes in the box, and this is also the only camping mattress in our registry with a published weight limit worth the name: Etekcity states 650 lb support, on an 80 x 60-inch, 9-inch-thick wave-beam airbed with a flocked top and PVC it describes as 20% thicker than standard. Two-year warranty — the longest here — and no repair kit listed. It is the pick if a published capacity matters; see mattresses for heavy people.

Napier Sportz (#3). The pump is a hand pump built into the mattress, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to lose — the most reliable arrangement on this page, and the slowest. 5 inches thick with a large side deflation valve, 400 lb published, and Napier is the only airbed maker here that sells replacement parts. Its warranty is the weakest of the four.

SoundAsleep Dream Series (#4). The comfort winner and the wrong tool, as above. If your camping is at powered sites, or the mattress doubles as your guest bed at home, buy it and ignore this page's ordering.

The catch with every airbed

None of them publishes an R-value. Not one. An airbed is a large volume of circulating air between you and cold ground, and it is the coldest way to sleep outside short of a bare tent floor. A puncture ends the night. Foam still supports you when it loses pressure; air does not. That is the whole argument in self-inflating vs air mattress, and it is why every airbed here scores around 4 while the foam mats score 7 to 8.

If the pump is the appeal rather than the airbed, note that most good foam mats now include a pump sack: Exped ships a Top-Up Pump, Sea to Summit an Airstream pump sack, NEMO a Vortex pump sack and Therm-a-Rest a high-volume pump sack with the NeoLoft. What didn't make the list

• Coleman Airbed Cot Queen. A queen airbed on a 600 lb-rated cot frame with a 4D pump and two side tables — genuinely a mattress with a pump, and a cot, so we rank it in cots with a mattress where its cot rubric applies.
• Luno AIR BASE and AIR Truck Bed. Both include a 12V pump that runs off the car, which is a sensible arrangement for a vehicle mattress. See truck bed and SUV mattresses.
• Exped MegaMat and Therm-a-Rest MondoKing. Far better mattresses, with pump sacks rather than pumps. They are the answer if warmth and durability matter more than one-button inflation.
• Airbeds with an unnamed “built-in electric pump”. If the listing will not say what powers it, assume mains.

How to choose a camping mattress with a pump

Answer one question first: what powers it?

Rechargeable, cells, hand or mains. Everything else about a pump is detail. At an unpowered pitch, only the first three exist.

Then ask how long inflation takes

SoundAsleep publishes under three minutes for the Camping Series pump and under four for the Dream Series. Napier publishes nothing, because a hand pump takes as long as you take. A hand pump on a queen airbed is a genuine workout.

Assume you will need to top it up

Air contracts as the night cools, so every airbed feels softer at 3am. The Etekcity publishes a two-port valve specifically for topping up without deflating; that is a more useful feature than it sounds.

Bring a patch kit, and check one is included

SoundAsleep supplies a patch kit and publishes a leak-repair guide; Napier sells parts; Etekcity lists neither. Our leak repair guide covers finding the hole in the field.

Put something under it for warmth

No airbed here publishes an R-value. A closed-cell foam pad under an airbed adds insulation and puncture protection — Therm-a-Rest states the Z Lite SOL adds R 2.0 when layered — and it costs a fraction of the mattress. See sleeping pads for car camping.

And if you sleep on a cot

Do not put an airbed on a cot deck: it slides, and it sits against rivets and buckles. A foam pad is the right pairing, as covered in cots with a mattress.
