How we picked

Every cot here either includes a mattress, has one sold for it by its own maker, or is sized and shaped to hold a standard self-inflating pad without it sliding off. The order follows our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs rated capacity, frame and deck fabric, the written warranty and listed replacement parts before comfort and weight. One consequence of scoring this way is worth stating up front: the two cots that arrive with a mattress in the box finish fifth and sixth. That is not a trick. Both are Coleman, both are covered for one year, and Coleman sells no cot parts at all, so a torn deck or a leaking airbed retires the whole thing.

Two ways to buy a cot with a mattress

All-in-one. One purchase, one box, no compatibility question. The mattress is chosen for you, its thickness is usually not published, and it cannot be replaced separately when it flattens.

Cot plus pad. Two purchases, and you have to check the dimensions. In exchange you get a published R-value, a published thickness, a proper warranty on both halves, and the ability to replace either one. The cots, side by side

Why the TETON setup is first

Because it is the only cot-and-pad pairing we score where the two halves were designed for each other and both are backed for life. The Outfitter XXL cot is 80 x 35.5 inches, rated to 600 lb, on steel X-legs with a 600D IronStretch Oxford canvas deck 19.5 inches off the ground. TETON lists the cot top, end bars, side rails, legs, feet, frame caps and pivot-arm parts for it, and publishes a video showing a cot-top swap.

TETON then makes a Canvas Camp Pad in an Outfitter XXL size: 82 x 38 inches, 2.5 inches of foam, an R-value of 6.2, with slip-resistant loops and straps that attach to the cot's end bars, a removable cover and a lifetime warranty. Replacement covers are sold (foam is not). That is a complete, repairable sleep system rather than two products that happen to fit.

The trade is bulk and money. The cot is 26 lb and packs to 45 inches; the XXL pad is another 7.7 lb. This is a truck-and-basecamp setup, not a hike-in one. For the light end, the ALPS Ready Lite at #3 is 5 lb and its double-layer top sleeves a pad up to 2 inches thick, which solves the sliding-pad problem a different way.

The pads that fit a cot

Three pads do this job well, for three different budgets. Check the width against your cot's deck: a 30-inch pad on a 28-inch cot hangs over the rails and folds under you.

If you would rather have a thick mattress than a pad, the self-inflating mats in our camping mattress rankings are more comfortable still, but check the width: a 30-inch mat needs a 35-inch cot to sit flat.

If you want one box

Coleman ComfortSmart Deluxe Cot. A thick foam mattress pad over a coil suspension on an 80 x 30-inch steel cot 15 inches high, rated to 300 lb and designed by Coleman for sleepers up to 6 foot 6. It weighs 24.71 lb. Coleman does not publish the pad's thickness or an R-value, the warranty is one year, and Coleman sells no cot parts, so treat it as a comfortable cot with a limited life rather than a system.

Coleman Airbed Cot Queen. A queen airbed on a folding steel frame rated to 600 lb, 78 x 59 inches with a 22-inch bed height, plus a 4D pump and two side tables with cup holders. It is the easiest way to get two people off the ground in one purchase, and at 42.6 lb it is also the heaviest thing on this page. Coleman designs it for people up to 6 feet, which is the figure to check before anything else.

What didn't make the list

• Coleman Trailhead II. A good budget military-style cot, but Coleman Consumer Care states its canvas is not sold separately, and there is no pad in the box.
• Helinox Cot One and Cot Max. Superb cots, and Helinox sells an Insulated Cot One Pad for them, but the pad is a Cot One-specific accessory rather than a mattress, and the cots are ranked in our Cot One vs Cot Max comparison.
• Air mattress plus cot frame combinations from unbranded sellers. No published capacity for the frame, no R-value for the mattress, no warranty for either.

How to match a pad to a cot

Width first, then length

Match the pad to the cot's deck, not to your body. A pad narrower than the deck slides; a pad wider than the deck folds up at the rails and pushes you into the middle. The useful pairings from this page: a 30-inch pad on a 35-inch cot, a 38-inch pad on the Outfitter XXL, a 25-inch pad on a 28-inch cot.

R-value 4 or more if the nights get cold

On a cot, air moves under you all night, so under-insulation matters more than it does on the ground. The pads here publish 2.9 (ALPS Flexcore), 5.5 to 6.2 (TETON Canvas Camp Pad) and 6 (Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp). R-values add, so a thin closed-cell pad under a self-inflating one is a legitimate way to get there cheaply.

Stop the pad sliding

Three approaches, all real: a pad with straps built for cots (TETON), a cot with a sleeve for the pad (ALPS Ready Lite), or a fitted sheet stretched over both. The third costs nothing and works.

Foam beats air on a cot

A cot deck is a taut fabric with rails at the edges, and a pure air pad on it feels unstable and is a puncture risk against buckles and rivets. A self-inflating or solid-foam pad still supports you if it loses air, which is the same argument we make in self-inflating vs air mattress.

Check what the maker will sell you later

Then check the height you want to get up from

Adding a 2 to 2.5-inch pad raises your sleeping surface. On the Coleman Airbed Cot that is already 22 inches, which is close to a house bed. On the Ready Lite's 6-inch frame it is still very low. Our main cot rankings list every published deck height.
