How we picked

The order follows our Built-to-Last Score for mattresses and pads: face-fabric denier and whether the core is foam (25%), the written warranty (20%), repairability (15%), fit — R-value, thickness, width and top fabric (30%) — and weight (10%). The bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not slept on these; every figure links to its source. Where a maker publishes a weight limit we say so, and where it does not we say that too.

Almost nobody publishes a weight limit

Of the nineteen mattresses, pads and cot pads in our registry, exactly four publish a capacity figure of any kind: Etekcity (650 lb), Napier (400 lb), Luno (300 lb per side, on a vehicle mattress) and Coleman (600 lb, on an airbed-cot combination rather than a mattress). Therm-a-Rest, Exped, Sea to Summit, NEMO, ALPS and TETON publish none at all.

That is not evasion so much as physics: a foam mat does not have a failure load the way a cot frame does. It compresses, and the question is whether it compresses so far that your hip reaches the ground. So the useful question for a heavier sleeper is not “what is the limit” but “how much foam is between me and the floor, and what is holding the fabric together.”

What to read instead of a limit

• Foam, not air. A self-inflating or solid-foam mat still supports you when it loses pressure; an airbed does not. Under a heavier sleeper the seams and the valve are under more load, so the failure matters more.
• Thickness. More foam is more clearance before your hip finds the ground. Ours run from 2 inches (cot pads) to 5.9 inches (MegaMat Max).
• Face-fabric denier. The one published number that predicts abrasion and seam strength: 285D canvas (TETON), 75D base (Therm-a-Rest, Exped, Sea to Summit), unpublished on airbeds.
• Width. 25 inches is a backpacking dimension; 30 inches and up lets a broader sleeper turn over without finding the floor.
• Whether the valve is a part. Under more load, the valve is what leaks. Therm-a-Rest sells a WingLock Valve Repair Kit for the BaseCamp; nobody else in the category sells a valve.

The five, side by side

Why the MondoKing is first

It is the highest-scoring mattress on this site at 8.3 and it wins the rows that matter under load. The core is 4.25 inches of StrataCore urethane foam with vertical sidewalls, which keep the edges from collapsing when you sit on them — the exact moment a heavier sleeper finds out what a mat is made of. The shell is a 50D polyester knit top over a 75D base. The R-value is 7. Therm-a-Rest covers it with a limited lifetime warranty, repairs first, and sells Permanent Home and Instant Field repair kits; its TwinLock valve has no listed replacement kit, so valve trouble goes to the repair team.

Size matters here too: the XXLarge is 80 x 30 inches, so a broad sleeper is not hanging over the edge. It weighs 5 lb 8 oz in that size and packs to 31 x 10.3 inches, which is a car-camping proposition, not a backpacking one.

The honest caveat: Therm-a-Rest publishes no weight limit, so if you want a number on a page before you buy, this is not the mat that gives you one. What it gives you instead is the most foam-and-fabric per dollar and the best repair support in the category.

The rest of the list

TETON Canvas Camp Pad (#2). The toughest surface we score: 285D brushed polyester canvas over solid foam, in sizes up to 82 x 38 inches, R 5.5 to 6.2, with a removable washable cover, straps for a cot and a lifetime warranty. TETON sells replacement covers (not the foam). Solid foam cannot deflate at all, which for a heavier sleeper is the single most reassuring property on this page. It is bulky — 5.3 to 7.7 lb and a 31.5-inch roll.

Exped MegaMat Max (#3). The thickest mat we score at 15 cm (5.9 inches), 30.3 inches wide, with an ASTM R-value of 10.6 — warm enough for frost — and a 5-year warranty. Exped includes a repair kit and sells a Field Repair Kit, and repairs mats in its own workshops. If your complaint about camping mattresses is bottoming out, this is the answer; it is also 7.4 lb and the bulkiest thing here.

Etekcity EAM-EQ1 (#4). The only mattress in the category with a published 650 lb figure, on an 80 x 60-inch queen airbed 9 inches thick, with 20% thicker PVC than a standard airbed (Etekcity's claim), a flocked top, a rechargeable pump and a 2-year warranty. It scores 4.1 because it publishes no R-value, no denier and no weight, and because it is air: a puncture ends the night, and there is no repair kit listed.

Napier Sportz (#5). 400 lb published, 5 inches thick, with a hand pump built into the mattress — so nothing needs charging or an outlet — and Napier does sell replacement parts, which no other airbed maker here does. Its warranty is the weak point at under a year in our banding, and there is no published R-value.

The cot option, which has real numbers

If a published capacity is what you actually want, buy it on the cot rather than the mattress. Cot makers publish capacity because a cot frame does have a failure load: TETON publishes 600 lb for the Outfitter XXL, Disc-O-Bed 500 to 600 lb per cot, REDCAMP 500 lb and Coleman 600 lb for its Airbed Cot Queen. Put a 2 to 2.5-inch foam pad on a 600 lb cot and you have a rated sleep system with real figures behind both halves.

What didn't make the list

• Luno AIR BASE and AIR Truck Bed. Both publish 300 lb per side, which is a real figure, and both are shaped for a vehicle floor rather than a tent. See truck bed and SUV mattresses.
• SoundAsleep Camping Series Queen. A queen camping airbed with a rechargeable pump, and SoundAsleep publishes no capacity for it.
• Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft. 4.6 inches and very comfortable, and all air with no foam backup — the one property we weight against here.
• Every mat sold as “heavy duty” with no published denier or capacity. Two adjectives are not a specification.

How to choose a camping mattress if you are heavier

Buy foam, and buy it thick

Self-inflating or solid foam still holds you up when it loses pressure, and thickness is your clearance. 4 inches is comfortable, 5.9 inches (MegaMat Max) is generous, and 2 to 2.5 inches of dense foam is enough on a cot where the deck does the lifting.

Read the base fabric, not the top

The ground side is where abrasion and seam stress happen: 75D on the Therm-a-Rest and Exped mats, 285D canvas on the TETON, unpublished on both airbeds. Under more load, that number matters more.

Width before length

30 inches and up. A 25-inch mat is a backpacking width, and a broad sleeper ends up with an arm or a hip on the tent floor, which is cold as well as uncomfortable.

Check whether the valve is a part

If you want a number, get it from the cot

Cot makers publish capacities; mattress makers mostly do not. A 500 to 600 lb cot plus a foam pad gives you a rated system, and it also gets you off the ground, which is warmer and much easier to stand up from.

Don't forget the R-value
