How we picked

Every cot here publishes a deck at least 29 inches wide, which is the practical floor for turning over on your side. The order follows our Built-to-Last Score, which weighs rated capacity, frame and deck fabric, the written warranty and listed replacement parts before comfort and weight; the bands are on our scoring methodology page. We have not slept on any of these cots, and every figure links to its source.

Why a cot is hard on a side sleeper

On your back, your weight spreads across your shoulders, hips and heels. On your side, almost all of it goes through one shoulder and one hip, into a surface that is a sheet of fabric stretched over a frame. Three things follow.

Width decides whether you can turn over. A 25-inch cot is fine on your back and tight on your side, because your knees drift toward the rail. The cots here run from 29.5 to 39.5 inches.

A bar under the middle of the cot is a bar under your hip. Traditional cots brace the frame across the center, which is exactly where a side sleeper's hip lands. Disc-O-Bed publishes a no-center-bar design for its single cots; nobody else on this page publishes a claim either way, which is not the same as there being no bar.

Fabric tension does not compress. A taut deck spreads load but does not give way under a hip the way foam does. That is why the pad section below is not an afterthought: on your side, the pad does the work the cot cannot.

Why the TETON is first

It is the highest-scoring cot on this site at 8.5, and for a side sleeper the specification reads well in every row that matters: an 80 x 35.5-inch deck, 600 lb rated, 600D IronStretch Oxford canvas, 19.5 inches off the ground, and a lifetime warranty. TETON also sells the part a side sleeper eventually needs — the canvas cot top itself — along with end bars, side rails, legs, feet and frame caps, and publishes a video showing the swap.

Two honest notes. TETON does not publish a no-center-bar claim, so we cannot tell you there is nothing under your hip; and its own page lists steel X-legs in one place and “Frame Type: Aluminum” in the spec block, a contradiction we flag rather than resolve. At 26 lb it is a vehicle cot.

Disc-O-Bed 2XL Single (#2) is the one to buy if width is your priority: 85 x 39.5 inches, 1200D PU-coated polyester, 600 lb per cot, 14.5 inches of deck height, no center bar, and a parts list that runs to mats, rails, discs, stabilizer bars, end frames and foot plugs under a 5-year warranty. It is 36 lb and packs into a 47-inch bag, and two of them stack into a bunk — see cots for two.

ALPS Escalade Cot X-Large (#4). A 90 x 35-inch deck, the longest we score, 22.5 inches off the ground, in 600D polyester rated to 325 lb, under ALPS's lifetime defect warranty. Length matters to a side sleeper more than it looks: curling up eats length, and a tall sleeper on their side ends up with feet over the end bar. ALPS lists a replacement carry bag but not the bed fabric for this model.

Helinox Cot Max Convertible (#5). 83 x 29.5 inches at 6.5 inches high, packing to 23.5 x 6.5 x 5.5 inches — the only cot here you would carry any distance. Rated 320 lb, five-year warranty, and Helinox sells the replacement sheet, leg extensions and an insulated pad. It is the narrowest deck on the page, so it suits a side sleeper who does not thrash. The pad matters more than the cot

What didn't make the list

Coleman Trailhead II and Pack-Away. 35 and 32 inches wide, which would qualify, but Coleman publishes no fabric denier, covers cots for one year and states that cot canvas is not sold separately. A side sleeper wears a deck out faster than a back sleeper.
Helinox Cot One Convertible. 75 x 26 inches: excellent cot, too narrow to recommend first for side sleeping.
ALPS Ready Lite. 78 x 28 inches at 5 lb and 6 inches high, and the two-layer top sleeves a pad up to 2 inches — which is thinner than a side sleeper wants. It leads our low-profile cot rankings instead.

How to choose a cot if you sleep on your side

Measure your shoulders, then add room to turn

A 29-inch deck fits a side sleeper who stays still. 35 inches lets you roll from side to side without finding a rail, and 39.5 inches feels like a bed. Everything wider costs tent floor: check your tent's dimensions before the cot's.

Ask what is under the middle of the cot

Only Disc-O-Bed publishes a no-center-bar design among the cots we score. On any other cot, lie on it in a shop if you can, or put a thick pad on it and stop worrying about the bar.

Buy 4 inches of pad or more

Thickness is what stops a hip bottoming out. The Exped MegaMat Max publishes 5.9 inches, the NeoLoft 4.6 inches, and a cot-specific canvas pad 2 to 2.5 inches — enough for warmth, thin for a side sleeper. Match the pad width to the deck so it cannot fold at the rails.

Watch the deck-plus-pad height

A 19.5-inch cot plus a 6-inch mat puts your sleeping surface at 25 inches, which is higher than most house beds and needs headroom in a tent with sloping walls. The low cots on this page (Helinox at 6.5 inches) leave room for a thick pad.

Expect to replace the deck before the frame

Side sleeping concentrates load, so the fabric is what wears. TETON sells the cot top, Disc-O-Bed sells the mat and rails, ALPS sells the Ready Lite bed — and Coleman sells nothing. Our cot replacement parts guide lists who sells what.

How wide should a camping cot be for a side sleeper?

29 inches is the practical minimum, 35 inches lets you turn over freely and 39.5 inches is the widest single cot we score. Below about 28 inches your knees find the rail when you curl up.

Do camping cots hurt your shoulder or hip if you sleep on your side?

A bare cot can, because a taut fabric deck does not compress under a hip the way foam does. A pad 4 inches thick or more solves it; so does a 2 to 2.5-inch cot pad for most people, with less bulk.

Which camping cots have no bar in the middle?

Disc-O-Bed publishes a no-center-bar design for its XL and 2XL single cots. No other maker in our registry publishes a claim either way, which is not the same as there being no bar — check the photographs.

Is a cot or a thick mattress better for side sleeping?

A cot plus a thick pad. The cot gets you off cold, hard ground and gives a flat, predictable surface; the pad provides the compression your hip and shoulder need. A thick mattress on the ground is comfortable but colder and harder to get out of.

How much pad do you need on a cot as a side sleeper?

4 inches or more is the comfortable answer among the pads we score, and 2 to 2.5 inches of dense foam works for many people. What matters as much is width: the pad should be close to the deck width so it cannot fold under you.
