Every cot here publishes a deck or overall height of 15 inches or less. Within that group we ranked on the height first, because that is the point of the page, and then on our Built-to-Last Score — rated capacity, frame and deck fabric, the written warranty, listed parts. Why low matters in a tent

Head room. Most dome and tunnel tents have sloping walls, so every inch of cot height is an inch you cannot sit up in. A 6-inch cot leaves you sitting on the edge of the bed like a bed; a 19-inch cot in a 42-inch-tall tent leaves you ducking.

Footprint. A low cot with a tight frame takes less floor than a tall one with splayed legs, and a tent floor is the constraint that actually stops people buying the cot they want. All the cots here publish their in-use dimensions.

Getting in and out. This is the trade-off, and it goes the other way: a 6-inch cot is harder to stand up from than a 17-inch one. If that is your priority rather than head room, our main cot rankings list every published deck height, and the tallest we score is 22.5 inches.

What fits underneath. Nothing, on a 6-inch cot. That is the other reason Helinox sells leg extensions: 6.5 inches keeps you low, 15 inches gives you a boot-and-duffel shelf, and the same cot does both.

Why the Ready Lite is first

Nothing else we score combines a 6-inch height with a 5 lb weight and a lifetime warranty. ALPS builds it on 7000-series aluminum with shock-corded poles and a 420D polyester honeycomb ripstop bed rated to 300 lb, and it packs to 18 x 3 x 8 inches — small enough to live in a car permanently. ALPS also sells the Ready Lite Cot Bed Replacement, which is the sleeping fabric itself; among cot makers only ALPS, TETON and Disc-O-Bed will sell you the part that wears out.

The clever detail for tent use is the deck: the two-layer top forms a sleeve that holds an air pad up to 2 inches thick, so the pad cannot slide off in the night and you do not need a wider cot to keep it in place. The catch is that 2 inches is the limit — side sleepers who want 4 inches of foam should look at our cots for side sleepers instead.

Helinox Cot One Convertible (#2). 6.5 inches off the ground, a 75 x 26-inch bed rated to 320 lb, and a 21 x 6 x 5.5-inch packed size — the smallest packed cot we score. “Convertible” is the feature that matters here: Helinox sells Cot Leg Extensions that take the same cot to 15 inches. Five-year warranty, and Helinox sells the replacement sheet, an insulated pad and the extensions.

Helinox Cot Max Convertible (#3). The same height and the same convertible trick with 8 more inches of bed (83 x 29.5 inches), for taller sleepers. It packs to 23.5 x 6.5 x 5.5 inches and weighs more, which is the whole difference between the two — we work through it in Cot One vs Cot Max.

Disc-O-Bed XL Single (#4). The best-built cot on this page: 1200D PU-coated polyester on powder-coated anti-rust steel, 500 lb rated, no center bar, 5-year warranty, and a parts catalog that covers mats, rails, discs, end frames and foot plugs. At 11 inches it is the tallest cot we would still call low profile, and its round-frame feet are gentler on a tent floor than a tube end. 36 lb, so it stays in the car.

Coleman ComfortSmart Deluxe (#5). 15 inches high with a thick foam mattress pad and coil suspension included, on an 80 x 30-inch deck rated to 300 lb for sleepers up to 6 foot 6. It is the most comfortable cot here out of the box and the least repairable: Coleman covers it for one year and sells no cot parts at all. Cot feet and tent floors

No maker in our registry publishes a claim about protecting a tent floor, so treat what follows as arithmetic rather than a test result: a cot puts your whole weight through four to eight small contact points instead of spreading it over a pad.

What didn't make the list

• TETON Outfitter XXL and ALPS Escalade XL. 19.5 and 22.5 inches high. Both are better cots than most of this list and both are the wrong shape for a tent with sloping walls. They lead our main rankings and tall-sleeper rankings.
• Coleman Trailhead II and Pack-Away. Both 17 inches: just outside this page, and Coleman states cot canvas is not sold separately.
• Disc-O-Bed bunk kits. The point of a bunk is height, so the top deck sits 32 inches up. For two people in one tent footprint, see cots for two.

How to choose a low-profile cot for a tent

Measure the tent, not the cot

Start with your tent's floor dimensions and peak height, then subtract: cot height plus pad thickness is your new floor. A 6-inch cot with a 4-inch pad still leaves you 10 inches up before you have lain down.

Check the in-use footprint, not just the sleeping surface

Legs splay. TETON publishes an in-use figure of 86 x 45 inches for an 80 x 35.5-inch deck, which is 10 inches of footprint you would not have guessed. Every cot on this page publishes its in-use or overall dimensions.

Decide whether you want storage underneath

If you do, buy the Helinox and its leg extensions, or accept a taller cot. At 6 inches nothing fits under the bed, which is fine in a big tent and a problem in a small one.

Protect the floor

Foam squares under the feet, set up inside the tent, and use the foot plugs or caps the maker sells. This is the one piece of advice on the page that costs nothing and prevents the most expensive failure.

Match the pad to the cot, not to the tent
