TETON sells the sleeping pad separately, and a cot leaves open air under the sleeper, so plan on a pad as part of the gift. A camper who has everything usually already owns a full-size chair. What they may not own is a second one that fits in a daypack. The Helinox Chair One weighs 1 lb 15 oz and packs to 14 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches, yet Helinox rates it to 320 lb and seats it on recycled 600D polyester over an aluminum frame. It scores 7.2, tied with the Ready Lite cot, and the reason is repairability. Helinox sells a replacement seat, rubber feet and a carry case for this exact chair, and its FAQ says broken poles can be repaired at its service center. The warranty is five years against manufacturing defects.

For a family, the Disc-O-Bed XL Bunk Cot is two cots in one gift. Disc-O-Bed rates each to 500 lb on a 79 x 35-inch, 1200D deck with no center bar, and the pair stacks into a bunk (1,000 lb total) or stands side by side as two singles. The catch is size: 17 lb 8 oz and 47 x 24 x 6 inches folded, so measure the trunk first. ALPS lists no replacement parts for it online.

For the camper who naps at camp, the Kelty Deluxe Lounge Chair reclines to three positions. Kelty rates it to 400 lb, with quilted 600D polyester, a 19-inch seat height and a 37.5-inch overall height, at 10 lb 5 oz. Its weak point is the paperwork: Kelty covers furniture for one year, though its in-house team repairs damage outside warranty at what Kelty calls a reasonable rate. Before you buy a gift for a camper

Check their weight against the rating, with room to spare

Every capacity on this page is the maker's own number. Most makers don't say whether that rating means sitting still or dropping into the seat, and a chair gets dropped into, rocked and leaned back in. Measure the tent and the trunk

The big gifts are big. The TETON cot is 86 x 45 inches set up and packs 45 inches long. The ALPS rocker folds to 47 inches. The Disc-O-Bed bunk comes in two 39.5-inch bags. At the other end, the Helinox Chair One packs to 14 inches and the Ready Lite cot to 18. If you can't measure their car, the small gifts are the safe ones.

Several warranties on this page are written for the original buyer. ALPS provides warranty service to “the original consumer purchaser” with proof of purchase from an authorized ALPS dealer, and Helinox counts its five years from the original owner's date of purchase and requires an authorized dealer.
