Two things to know. It weighs 13 lb and packs 40 inches long, so it's a chair for the tailgate and the campsite, not the trail. And the warranty excludes UV damage, burns, storm and wind damage and normal wear and tear, so it covers defects, not a chair left out in the sun. ALPS lists a replacement carry bag for it; other parts are by phone.

For the dad with a bad back or stiff knees

The STRONGBACK Elite is built around one idea: a lumbar support integrated into the frame, with a padded lumbar cushion on top. It adds an 18-inch seat, a 23-inch seat width and steel-framed armrests to push up from, on a 300 lb-rated powder-coated steel frame with 600D fabric, at 11.9 lb. STRONGBACK's guarantee is the only one here that names Amazon: 2 years on Amazon purchases, 3 years bought direct, with fabric limited to 1 year. Skip it if he weighs close to 300 lb. If the trouble is getting up rather than sitting, look at seat height. The Guide Gear Oversized Tall Director's Camp Chair has the highest seat in our registry at 22 inches, on a powder-coated steel frame rated to 500 lb with 600-denier polyester, padded foam armrests and a side table with a cup holder. Sportsman's Guide publishes a lifetime guarantee on Guide Gear, though that page doesn't say whether Amazon purchases qualify, and no parts are listed. For the tall dad who sleeps out

Plenty of cots stop short of 80 inches, which is a problem for a tall sleeper. The ALPS Mountaineering Escalade Cot X-Large is 90 inches long and 35 inches wide, the longest cot we list, and it stands 22.5 inches high, which makes it easier to sit on and stand up from than a low cot. ALPS builds it with 600D polyester on a powder-coated aluminum frame with a telescoping center support, and backs it with a lifetime warranty. It scores 7.0. Check three things first. His tent floor has to be longer than 90 inches. The cot weighs 24 lb and packs to 46 x 7 x 7 inches. And ALPS rates it to 325 lb, lower than the 500 to 600 lb cots in our heavy-duty camping cot rankings, which is where to shop for a dad near or over that number. For the dad who walks to his spot

For the dad who hikes, hunts, fishes or walks from the far lot, the Helinox Chair One XL is the chair that goes with him. It packs to 18.5 x 5 x 4.5 inches and weighs 3 lb 5 oz, yet Helinox rates it to 320 lb, gives it 40% more sitting room than the original Chair One, and uses recycled 600D polyester on an aluminum frame. Helinox sells its replacement seat, feet and case, and its FAQ says broken poles can be repaired at its service center, which is why it scores 6.9 despite a lower comfort score. For the dad who wants his feet up

The Guide Gear Oversized Zero-Gravity Chair is the nap gift. The listing says it reclines back 68 inches, comes with a headrest pillow and is rated to 500 lb on tubular steel with 600-denier polyester. It carries the same Sportsman's Guide lifetime guarantee on Guide Gear, with the same Amazon question. At 23 lb it's a chair that lives beside the truck. The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker XL is the rocker for a bigger dad. GCI rates it to 400 lb, the top rating in its rocker lineup, with a 20-inch seat and padded solid armrests, and it still folds flat to 4.9 inches thick at 13.4 lb. GCI covers its chairs for three years but says sun damage and extended exposure to the elements void the warranty, and its care page warns that the steel parts may rust if a chair isn't stored indoors after use. This one belongs in the garage between trips, not the truck bed. The backrest is 17.5 inches, so skip it if he wants head support. It comes from our rocking camping chair rankings.

His weight, with headroom

The ratings here run from 300 lb (STRONGBACK) to 800 lb (King Kong), and every one is the maker's number. Most makers don't say whether a rating means sitting still or dropping into the seat, so choose one rated well above his weight. His knees

Seat height is the number that decides whether a chair is easy to get out of: 22 inches on the Guide Gear Tall Director, 20 on the GCI Rocker XL, 19 on the King Kong, 18 on the STRONGBACK. Solid armrests help too; STRONGBACK and GCI both publish them.

His truck

Weights range from 3 lb 5 oz (Helinox Chair One XL) to 23 lb (Zero-Gravity) and 24 lb (Escalade cot). A pickup takes any of them. A small hatchback may not take a 46-inch cot bag, so check before you buy.

The warranty, and the receipt

Read the terms if the warranty is the reason you're buying. ALPS provides warranty service to “the original consumer purchaser” with proof of purchase from an authorized ALPS dealer. GCI's applies “only to the original purchaser,” is non-transferable, and asks that claims in the first 90 days go to the retailer. STRONGBACK gives Amazon purchases 2 years.
